True Motivation Comes From Within
We all feel how we can be encouraged by other people. Whenever I teach one of my clients or speak in front of a group, many of them say that I am a motivational speaker. The truth is, I can’t inspire anyone but myself. I can help inspire people, but I don’t inspire them. People will motivate themselves for their own reasons.
The old “carrot in front of the horse” trick is a motivational tool that makes the horse want to go there. It was not an external thing that motivated the horse, but his inner motivation to eat so he wouldn’t starve. What people perceive as external stimuli will not make a person want to do something unless they want to.
So what are the reasons why people motivate themselves? It starts with a person’s values and beliefs. Whatever we want in life, what we want to achieve, what we value and what we believe have a huge impact on our behavior. This is one of the reasons why a person who wants a lot of money, but whose principles are based on the idea that “money is the root of all evil” will not really motivate to make a lot of money. On the outside, they may think they can, but on the inside, that’s what matters.
In fact, our top five values are what drive us to do what we do. These principles can come from many areas of our lives. This includes our parents, our culture, our community, our religion, our friends, our experiences, etc. Perhaps the biggest part of our character comes from our parents. We respected them when we were children and what they believed and valued was often ours.
The good news is that many of our preferences change and we can control when this happens. What we believe also changes. What we believed many years ago may not be what we believe today. This is one of the reasons why we will see politicians change parties.
The people we hang out with will have an impact on what we believe. It has been said that we are the average of the top five people we associate with the most. Think about the friends you have today, are they the same ones you had in high school? If you went to college and most of your high school friends stayed home and worked at McDonalds or started working as a mechanic, did you see them differently when you went with them later? What about when you went to the army, did your opinion change? We started different relationships when we left. What we believed changed. And even some of the principles we follow may change.
Everything counts. Everything we do, who we are with, what we put into life, what we did or didn’t do – it matters. Think about what got you to where you are now. What were the things in your life that motivated you to do the things you did? What motivates you now?
