Street Preaching 101
The Do’s and Don’ts of Street Preaching
“Let all things be done properly and in order” 1 Cor. 14:40
First, as the Corinthians say, we must be organized and preach the gospel in the streets. Keeping yourself and the team organized is the key to being successful on the streets. We need to remember the ears we are preaching to so we don’t want to hear a mouthy fool telling them how fast they are going to Hell. There is a need for us to take the Gospel to the streets but with love. We don’t want to offend and push the losers away.
Anxious and anxious voices that don’t sound sincere. Don’t be angry or angry with what you say.
Don’t try to tell them that they are showing off your superior knowledge of the Gospel. The streets are not the place to speak to those who will hear your message.
Name calling can be a good way to get arrested, it can get the police to take you instead of people taking the Gospel. Profanity or anything perceived as discrimination can get you into serious trouble. If you are not preaching love and compassion in the streets then find another place to take it out other than the streets.
Facial expressions can make or break the audience when they gather and see your personality. Looking at the stone cold or if you are ready to hit them will turn them off immediately. Try to match your facial expressions with what you are saying. When talking about God’s love or heaven, try to look like you know what you are trying to convey. So they are the proof of your lesson, keep it fresh in word and form.
Preach the Gospel, leave your convictions to share one by one when asked.
I have heard that any fool can be arrested by preaching. Know why you’re there, being tied up doesn’t help losers win. Also, don’t go to preach just to get arrested. However, if you are arrested, make sure it is because of street preaching. There is a long line of other mistakes that can come along with street preaching. Common mistakes in street preaching are:
B) disordered behavior
C) failure to keep pace
D) disturbing the peace
To avoid some or all of these issues, here are some areas to look out for:
1) Stay away from common goods
2) Do not use the PA system, some towns have regulations regarding the use and noise level.
3) Avoid preaching at night, although there may be several times that are different from what you can do to avoid preaching on the streets at night.
4) ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, have a helper with you. Don’t walk alone, no matter what kind of person you are, don’t walk alone on the streets.
Check with local authorities before you go out, especially if you are from out of town and don’t know the town’s rules. Knowledge will keep you on the streets, out of jail, and safe. If possible talk to the local police and let them know what you need to do and where. It is good to let them know when you will be there and what you will say. Ask for the Badge number and the name of the person you are talking to to make sure it is okay. Write these three things down and keep them with you. When this happens, when the police are found, the person in charge of the preacher can hand it over to the police and tell them that there is no problem for you to go.
It is inevitable in the traffic service to think that you will never be called to the police again. Remember that the Gospel is a disappointment to those who are lost.
Limit your time. You don’t need to be there for hours. Somewhere along the line people will be angry you’ve been around for too long. A good rule of thumb is 25-35 minutes of preaching is enough time to spread the gospel. It may take a few minutes after you start to get people to gather to listen but then go preach the message and do it with kindness. When you have the music, give yourself 45-50 minutes. One or two good catchy songs and then a message.
Keep it simple! Preach salvation! Do not preach in the streets about the doom and gloom of things to come. Do not preach Hell Fire and Destruction. You are there as an ambassador for Jesus Christ to win the lost and not push them away.
The best traffic news is the one you know the news inside and out. Of course it’s a good thing to have your own Bible, but it’s more effective if you don’t have to read but instead recite the verses. Enter your message or know what you want to say. Text is not a useful tool on the streets. I know you’ve seen and heard preachers in churches all the time using scriptures as not reading directly, but on the streets that won’t work. People expect you to be a professional, or you wouldn’t be there. If you know one sermon by heart, preach it every time you go out, just go to different places with the message.
Always be in prayer for your street preaching, or public preaching. Pray that God will guide you and protect you in all things. Pray for the power of the Holy Spirit to carry your message. Pray that the Blood of Jesus will cleanse the area where you are about to preach. Pray that God will give you words to speak and that you will not be confused. Disruptions will not only come but WILL come. Pray to God to give you the strength to preach around distractions or to them with the right words. You have to be “stable in the weather and outside”. Don’t let it bother you that you preach the best gospel and no one is saved. Remember Paul’s words: “I planted, Apollos watered, but God made it grow” 1 Cor. 3:7.
Compassion and concern for the lost will be your greatest weapon in street preaching.
These are a few lessons to get you started on street preaching, if you want to start this ministry I have a few more to go through. Be open to God’s word, listen as He leads. Do it in God and not in yourself. “I will decrease, and He will increase”, know that it is not you who will be raised but the Word of God. Finally, make sure that God has called you to this ministry. Make sure that it is in the will of God and the plan of your life to preach His Holy Word in the streets. AND, God bless you as you go.
Street Preaching 201, a clear look at street preaching. I hope they all read the second one like the first.
