My Top iPad VPN Accessories for Business
If you’ve been through an electronics store or airport (but I’m repeating myself), you’ve probably seen the installation of the iDevice. Covers, guides, converters and an amazing list of mobile phones. There are many tools to help you VPN your iPad. I love music as much as the next person but I’ll buy (some) headphones that cost as much as the plane I’m about to board. That said, here are some extras that are important to me.
Telefunken XO iPad Pen – it’s not cheap but if you’re tired of the crayon-esque attempts of other vendors, treat yourself to an iPad VPN pen that actually works. Kudos to Telefunken for software updates that add functionality and improve performance.
AppleTV – ok so it’s not an *iPad* accessory but it’s a great way to get iPad content to an HDMI TV or projector. For some reason, the ubiquitous stereo iPhone docks don’t seem to fit iPads and I’ve never seen a 30 pin extender to allow hacking. The answer, AppleTV and HDMI cable – the best music, movies or funny cat videos in all their 50″ plasma screen glory.
Kanex ATV Pro – the eagle that looked between you read the past and laughed – Most office or conference machines do not have HDMI! AppleTV is a toy for the home! Well… not really. The smart people at Kanex have created the ATV Pro – Apple’s HDMI to VGA adapter with a 3.5mm audio jack. And it’s HDMI powered so no messy cables. Together, the two of them make it possible to enter any meeting and look great when you can access it wirelessly from your iPad even if the projector is older than you.
Many business owners use their iPad VPN to listen to music on the go. Headphones – the ones that came with your iPad are fine but you can make a big difference in how long (over an hour or more) you can listen to music on your iPad VPN. This is a wonderful place so instead of making one example; I will make all the other suggestions. First, noise-cancelling (active) headphones and headphones require more power than most – this can be a concern if you want to sleep listening on a flight, only to wake up to find your battery dead.
Some audiophiles who use an iPad VPN swear by a type of headset called the ‘in ear canal’. Personally, I can’t stand them and find the only thing worse than using them is the price – you can spend $200 on a set. The best (for me at least) is the very beautiful sound of the ‘canal-buds’. This is cheap, a big upgrade on Apple’s level and, best of all, it doesn’t sound like part of ‘America’s Funniest Insertion Tragedies’. (A show I would watch if anyone is in the industry).
A good case – The last step on the good list, your iPad case protects not only your $500+ investment but also your belongings. Sure, it can be helped but it’s not helpful if you arrive at your meeting with a banana-shaped iPad and don’t have a presentation. Although cold, Apple magnetic screen-cover-only cases are not a function of protecting the iPad that you can drop tiles (check), stay (check) or drive (Che … long story, wasn’t I fair). I have yet to find a case for the 2nd and 3rd gen iPads that is as good as Apple’s ‘moleskin’ for the iPad 1.
A MiFi – A MiFi is a mobile phone without a bezel or screen. In short, it’s a 3G modem with an internet battery and enough operating system to connect to cellular and stream it via WiFi. So, even if your iPad is Wi-Fi only, you can have access to it anywhere there is a signal. This assumes you have an airtime contract for your MiFi but it’s only when you’re traveling that this makes sense. When you arrive, simply purchase a prepaid or pay as you go contract from your local carrier and insert it into your MiFi. Now you have internet access on your iPad, mobile phone or laptop. And you can share with your travel buddies or just enjoy the glory of being alone without a huge travel bill when you get back!
If you have an older Android phone, these can be used as MIFI devices through their connection function. Whether you’re using an old smartphone or a MiFi, be aware that these units don’t support more than five connected devices so don’t share your password with too many people or you’ll get locked out!
There are many add-ons that support and help you get the most out of your iPad VPN. Make sure you always keep your iPad safe and secure to get the most out of your device.
