John Lennon – The Misunderstood Beatle

While watching Monday night football, on the uneventful evening of December 8, 1980, I was breastfeeding, when I heard Howard Cosell interrupt the game with a story. John Lennon was shot in New York City? Could that be true? It was true. Later, he was pronounced dead. I was scared. Then my brother Mark called me to tell me the news. We were all John Lennon fans.

The Beatles, a four-piece outfit from the 60s, were each given a nickname that was picked up by their fans. John was smart, Paul was handsome, George was amazing and Ringo was funny.

I always hear the description of John Lennon or the nickname, it should be called “the mysterious Beatle,” because he always seemed to cause controversy for his beliefs. He couldn’t clarify his comments, and the media didn’t help.

For example, the words he said on March 4, 1966, when he said, “The Beatles are more famous than Jesus.” What he meant was that more people would go to see the Epistles, than go to church on Sunday. Which was probably true. He added a little by accusing America, when he meant England.

Lennon was interviewed in the London Evening Standard by Maureen Cleave, who was his friend, and he talked about religion. Lennon said, “Christianity will go away.” It will disappear and diminish. it is ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me.

On August 11, 1966, The Beatles held a press conference in Chicago, to address the growing crisis.

Lennon: I think if I had said TV was more popular than Jesus, I would have stopped, but I kept talking to my journalist friend (Maureen Cleave), and I used the word “Beatles” as something distant. , not as I thought – like the Bitolozi, like other Bitolozi, like other people see us. I just said that he has more power over children and things than anything else, including Jesus. But I said it that way, which is the wrong way.

Journalist: Some young people echo your words–“I like The Beatles more than Jesus Christ.” What do you think about this?

Lennon: Well, in the beginning I made this point about England. that we meant more to children than Jesus did, or religion at that time. I wasn’t knocking it or putting it down. I was only speaking the truth, and it is truer in England than here. I am not saying that we are better or greater, or comparing ourselves to Jesus Christ as a person or God as a thing, or whatever it is. I just said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken the wrong way. And now it’s all about this.

Journalist: But are you ready to apologize?

Lennon: I wasn’t saying anything he said. I’m sorry I said it. I didn’t mean it to be a nasty anti-religious thing. I’m sorry if that bothers you. I still don’t know what I’ve done. I tried to tell you what I did, but if you want me to apologize, if it makes you happy, OK, I’m sorry.

John Lennon returned to the subject later that year, when he told Look magazine, “I believe Jesus was right, Buddha was right, and all those people are right. They all say the same thing – and I believe what Jesus really said – the most important things he put about love and goodness – not what people say he said. soon they would all follow us even if it was to dance and sing for the rest of their lives. If they were really interested in what Jesus – or any of them – said, if they would have done that, we would all be there. there they are.

Although they didn’t do anything with his words in England, Christians somewhere started a big project to destroy Beatle albums and other materials. The archbishop of Boston admitted that he may have been right, but many still refused to forgive him.

I agree with his argument, because I’ve said the same thing, like, when I’m driving by a gambling casino on Sunday, I say–“look at all those cars–trying to pick them up in the church. parking lot.” Yes, my meaning was that gambling is more popular than Jesus. I hope that is not true, here in America. Am I in trouble for saying that?

All this did not bother Lennon, he continued to use religious words in his songs, one was GodIt was released in 1971. The lyrics are:

God (words and music by John Lennon)

God is an idea

How we measure

Our pain

I’ll say it again

God is an idea

How we measure

Our Pain

I don’t believe in magic

I don’t believe in the I-ching

I don’t believe in the Bible

I don’t believe in tarot

I don’t believe in Hitler

I don’t believe in Jesus

I don’t believe in Kennedy

I don’t believe in Buddha

I don’t believe in mantra

I don’t believe in Gita

I don’t believe in yoga

I don’t believe in kings

I don’t believe in Elvis

I don’t believe Zimmerman

I don’t believe in Bitoloz

I just believe in myself

Yoko and me

And that’s the truth

The dream is over

What can I say?

The dream is over

Yesterday

I was a dream weaver

But now I am born again

I was a walrus

But now I’m John

And so dear friends

You have to keep going

The dream is over

THE END

Again, Lennon was misunderstood. He was disappointed by many Christians. I always understood Lennon’s style. I felt that he wanted to ask questions that we did not dare to ask. He was the barrier between reality and make believe. Some thought it was dangerous. I thought it was not a problem. Although he said that “I don’t believe in Jesus.” And he said, “I don’t believe in the Bible.” Maybe he should have left them in the song, at least to avoid controversy and save his career.. But, Lennon was Lennon, and he didn’t care. He said that he has the right to say what he wants to say or sing what he wants. I’m sure it hurt his career. Paul McCartney’s career continued to flourish. Don’t want to leave George and Ringo. Their jobs were fixed.

I always thought that the perfect song for John Lennon would be–Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, written and performed by fellow musician and friend, Eric Burdon. He, too, wrote a book under the same title.

In 1973, Lennon wrote and performed the song, Just imagine, a very controversial song– but popular. It questioned the existence of heaven and hell and no religion. This also angered the Christians. His message made sense to me. He was just saying that, if there were none of these things that he is thinking about, the world would be at peace – as one thing. What is the struggle? There would be no war. Most wars are religious. This song is just an idea. He is not a terrorist who wants to blow up the world. His words are:

Just imagine

(words and music by John Lennon)

Imagine there is no heaven

It’s easy if you try

There is no hell below us

Only the sky above us

Think of all the people

Living today

Imagine there are no countries

It is not difficult to do

There is no killing or dying

And there is no religion anymore

Think of all the people

To live in peace

You could say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope one day you will join us

And the world will be united

Imagine you have no property

I wonder if you can

There is no need for greed or hunger

Human relationships

Think of all the people

Sharing the world

You could say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope one day you will join us

And the world will be united

THE END

Lennon was always outspoken. Some say he was a hypocrite when he preached love and peace, not war. In 1969, he expressed his faith in his songwriting, Give Peace a Chanceafter leaving The Beatles, at the time he was working on his own.

He defended freedom and many causes. He was anti-war. His beliefs were not clear and he was often considered a socialist or communist. President Nixon wanted him fired. Lennon stood up and fought for his right to live where he loved to live—in New York City, USA Tragically, it was also the place where he was killed by a confused fan.

During his solo career, Lennon wrote and performed songs that rebelled against his political views. He hangs out with anti-war leaders, such as, Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman, and others. Lennon and his friends organized a concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in December 1971, called “Free John Sinclair”. Sinclair was a local activist who served ten years in state prison for selling two marijuana plants to an undercover cop. Lennon appeared on stage with Phil Ochs, Stevie Wonder and other musicians, including anti-war Jerry Rubin and Bobby Seale of the Black Panthers. There were 20,000 in attendance; two days after the concert, the state of Michigan released John Sinclair from prison. During this time, a song written and sung by Lennon was released, called John Sinclair.

In 1972, Lennon released an anti-sex song called, A Woman Is A World Leader, meaning that just as black people were discriminated against in other countries, women around the world are discriminated against. His words are:

A Woman Is A World Leader

(words and music by John Lennon)

Woman is the enemy of the world

Yes they are…think about it

Woman is the enemy of the world

Think about it…do something about it

We paint her face and dance

If he does not become a slave, we say that he does not love us

If he is real, we say he is trying to be a man

When we knock him down, we pretend he is above us

The woman is the midwife of the world… yes she is

If you don’t believe me, look at who you are with

A woman is a slave of slaves

Ah, yeah…better shout about it

We make him give birth and raise our children

And then we leave her in the house for being a fat mother hen

We tell him that home is where he should be

So we worry that he is unselfish enough to be our friend

The woman is the midwife of the world… yes she is

If you don’t believe me, look at who you are with

A woman is a slave of slaves

Yeah…well…fight!

We mock him every day on TV

And I wonder why he doesn’t have guts or confidence

When he is young we kill him to want to be free

By telling him not to be so smart we put him down for being dumb

Woman is the enemy of the world

Yes they are…if you don’t believe me, look at who you are with

A woman is a slave of slaves

Yes they are…if you don’t believe me, you better be screaming

We paint her face and dance

We paint her face and dance

We paint her face and dance

We paint her face and dance

We paint her face and dance

We paint her face and dance

THE END

Interestingly enough, in 1971, Lennon, too, wrote and performed the song, titled, Merry Christmas. This became a holiday favorite. It is doubtful why he left Christ in Christmas. But “X” is the Greek symbol for Christ.

This year is the 26th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. His killer is still in prison, as he should be. The world of music was robbed of musical talent. I really miss his work and imagination. If it weren’t for his strong beliefs, he might be with us today. Maybe that’s what killed him. But just imagine (I wonder if you can)–then there wouldn’t be a John Lennon.
