Email Security: Be Smarter Than a Politician
About 20 years ago, my life changed. I have been working for a non-profit organization for several years. The work was tedious and involved a lot of travel. My boss was a very driven person who had little interest in life outside of work and expected the rest of us to be the same.
I wasn’t. I had finished university, written a book, ended a bad relationship and felt free for the first time in a long time. I wanted to work to help the poor people of South Africa to have property, but I also wanted to play the guitar.
At that time, I started listening to a famous British band called Radiohead. I remember telling the day – the teacher – that I had them. He said, “Oh, yes! That was our last day.
One of the group’s best songs, which features guitarist Jonny Greenwood, features the following lyrics:
You do it yourself, you do it
And that is what hurts the most
Do you treat yourself, yourself
You and no one else
I would like to dedicate this song to Hillary Clinton, her campaign chairman John Podesta and the Democratic National Committee…
It has been stolen to the Provinces
Hillary Clinton’s email problems are well known.
First there was a secret server in the basement. Then the DNC emails were hacked, costing Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz her job. And this month, the whistle-blowing media organization WikiLeaks — which, contrary to media reports, is not pro-Trump, only anti-Clinton — intercepted John Podesta’s emails.
Whatever you think of the output (which seems reasonable to me), the fact that these powerful people were so easily duped is shocking. What were they thinking? Didn’t they realize that email is as secure as snail mail, if a determined hacker is after you?
Obviously not. Like Colin Powell, whose private emails were hacked for a while, Podesta used a business email – Gmail.
For a celebrity, using an e-mail powered by a free ad like Google or Yahoo is like a group of Marines driving through Mosul in a VW minibus. Someone is drilling.
The Obama administration blames Russia for these hacks, which is perfect for Hillary – they can deflect all questions by focusing on what they say is a threat to our national security and elections. But if a Russian could hack it, he was probably a 10-year-old kid… because the method used was the simplest, oldest method in the book.
Go to Phish
Cybersecurity firm SecureWorks said the hack used to access Podesta’s email account involved a link to an innocent-looking email that appeared to be from Google. The email asked Podesta to log into his Google account by clicking on a hyperlink, which he did.
When Podesta clicked on the link, he was taken to a fake Google website where he entered his username and password. With them, the hacker had access to his entire email history.
It’s called “phishing”. Instead of going to the trouble of cracking Podesta’s password, the hacker tricked him into voluntarily giving up his login information.
In other words, Podesta did it to himself. He alone and no one else.
Avoiding Email Phishing Hooks
How can you avoid this disaster? It’s easier than you think:
When you receive an email asking you to log in to a website, be sure to review the link. All you have to do is place the mouse pointer over the link. Google’s virtual web address ends in .com. It’s the last piece of text before the first iteration in the link you see when you hover over it. That ended in “tk,” which stands for the South Pacific island of Tokelau: a dead giveaway — if you’re looking, that is.
When you click on a link like Podesta’s, check the link on the page you’re on before you do anything else. If it ends in anything other than the exact name of the correct publisher (ie, Google.com), you’re being scammed. Podesta’s fraudulent link ended in “tk,” the last part of the address before the first return. This would have looked good in his browser address – again, if he was paying attention.
Don’t use free email for anything serious. No Google, Outlook, Yahoo, AOL or Mail.com. Besides being easy to hack, they both store your emails so that they know more about you that can be used to target ads to you.
Go The Last Mile
For extra security, sign up for a secure email address like Protonmail or Tutanota. Apart from being kept secret and the number of companies that host them, they are all managed by secret codes and are located in Europe, outside of US spying.
So, there you have it. When it comes to email hacking, there’s no need to do it alone.
