Sex, Romance, and Redemption
Romantic, sweet, and touching are three words I would use to describe the wonderful book, Hana-lani, written by the talented author Christine Sunderland. There is a definite theme of hope and the possibility of redemption that runs through the book, but Hana-lani’s tone is not heavy. Reading it is like breathing the fresh air of the island, and its depiction of the Hawaiian life of Hana-lani, the former home of one of the book’s main characters, the old Nani Lei, is sure to inspire and brighten your life. day. Wealthy and beautiful Meredith Campbell, 36, who may have appeared in the TV show Sex In the City, seems to be from a very different world to Nani-Lei, her 52-year-old orphaned grandson, Henry, and six. – year-old daughter, Lucy. What will it take for these two people, Meredith and Henry, to meet, fall in love, and change their lives for the better?
City girl Meredith Campbell seems to have it all: a well-paying job, a rockin’ body, and a handsome doctor lover. Her life in San Francisco is sweet, but Meredith is also very selfish, and she believes that her body will bring her happiness. She doesn’t like having children, she thinks that going to visit her father in Florida at home is a waste of time. Also, she thinks, and her past experience has shown that with her beautiful body and flirting with men she can get almost anything she wants. He’s not a bad guy, but he knows what he wants and doesn’t succeed in using his charms to get it.
One day, his world began to unravel. She gets fired, and finds Nick, a doctor who is also her boyfriend, in bed with his ex-wife. Meredith decides to get away from it all, and even though Nick seduces her, she decides to follow him to Hawaii and go shirtless to him on the beach. At first, Meredith seemed very shallow to me, and I didn’t really like her character, to be honest. But the more I continued to read, the more I became interested in his character and wondered what would change him and begin to change his life.
It turns out that it took the small plane he was flying in to crash, killing the pilot he had slept with the night before, for him to start turning his life around. Nick’s expected arrival does not come, it is rainy weather, there is not much to do, and he wants to leave and go back to San Francisco to look for another job. The problem is, all flights have been canceled due to the weather. A shy guy she meets offers her a flight to sleep with, and although she’s not really attracted to the man, she accepts the arrangement because she wants to get off the island so badly and doesn’t care about the consequences. Both engines fail, and the plane crashes, despite the pilot’s best efforts to land.
Luckily for Meredith, the plane crashed near Hana-lani. Lucy sees “a plume of smoke,” rising over the acres surrounding the house, and leads her Nani tutu (grandmother) to the smoldering wreckage of the plane. There are no top-notch hospitals on the island, but even though Meredith is unconscious for several days and has cuts on her face and thigh, her injuries do not appear to be serious. Nani tutu brings him to Hana-lani to take care of him there, while he recovers.
Henry is a history professor who is on sabbatical to work on a book that his late wife, Maria, was preparing to write and publish. He has lost many of his bookshelves, and he just wants to focus on researching and writing this book, as a way of honoring Maria’s memory, if nothing else. He tolerates Meredith’s presence, but at first, he doesn’t want much to do with her, believing (rightly, at the time) that she’s shallow. How can he find himself again, and deal with the terrible loss he experienced when his wife died?
Hana-lani is a very well written book, about different worlds colliding. His descriptions of Hawaii will make you want to hop on the next plane to the islands to see their beauty for yourself. Also, I really enjoyed the quote the author, Christine Sunderland, uses from TS Eliot’s “Four Quartets.” He is one of my favorite poets, although I am familiar with some of his poems, such as “The Wasteland.” Hana-lani is a book that rises above most romance books, and is one of my favorite books to read. It’s still a light and fun read that will appeal to anyone who likes the Romance genre. I highly recommend this book. Check out Hana-lani today!
