Down Syndrome – Five Things You Should Know About Down Syndrome and Sexuality
You may be surprised to find an article about Down syndrome and sex when few doctors bring this up and it is not often included in the diagnosis of Down syndrome. You shouldn’t be surprised, though.
A common misconception is that people with disabilities don’t have the interest or capacity for the adult relationships that we all take for granted. This, however, is completely false.
People with Down syndrome grow up like everyone else, and have the same thoughts and desires as everyone else. This is not to be feared, however. With a few lessons tailored to their needs, adults with Down syndrome can learn to be more tactful about sex and learn how to reduce the risk of dangerous situations.
1. Sex is a part of everyone’s life
When we talk about sex and Down syndrome, we’re not just talking about teenagers and adults. All people go through different stages of sexual development, starting from infancy.
The first step is to develop close relationships with parents and relatives. School-aged children struggle with the beginnings of modesty and the desire to be independent. It is true that teenagers begin to experience sexual desire. There is nothing to be ashamed of, but proper education should be given to young people with Down syndrome to ensure that they know how to deal with these feelings in the right way.
2. Lack of Schools Created More Opportunities for People With Addictive Disorders
Until the 1960s and 1970s, people with Down syndrome often lived in same-sex households, and did not have many opportunities to socialize with the same sex. Now, people with Down syndrome have the right to independence and access to them, so they should also want what is available to all other people – the right to have healthy relationships.
3. Additional Problems for People With Down Syndrome Related to Sex
There are, of course, additional problems when we talk about people with Down syndrome and sex. It is clear that there is increased discrimination against people with Down syndrome who are sexually active.
Parents have a lot of worries about it, too. There is good reason to worry about this, unfortunately. People with Down syndrome have cognitive impairments that make them more vulnerable to sex, unwanted pregnancies, or sexually transmitted diseases. Women are particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. They cannot tell the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch”. They don’t know how to say no if something bothers them. They may be lonely and willing to put up with inappropriate behavior to get attention.
The isolation and communication issues that many people with Down syndrome face can make it difficult for them to access support services that can help them make decisions that are right for them.
4. There Are Ways to Avoid Rape and Harassment
The best way to help young people with Down syndrome become sexually intelligent is to start teaching them at an early age. Sex education for children with Down syndrome should start at an early age, and should focus on personal safety.
Children need to be taught the difference between good touch and bad touch, and how to “refuse” to move forward or touch what they don’t want. A concept called “Circles” can be used for older or more intellectually advanced children. Circles represent different levels of personal relationships and friendships. Students learn appropriate emotional behaviors at each level. Then they learn that sometimes their partner wants to be closer than they want, so they have to tell them clearly “Stop.”
Sex education should be individualized for each student with Down syndrome based on their ability to understand the content. It is important, however, to mention all the things that are often discussed about sex, because chances are, young people with Down syndrome should know this soon, to protect themselves.
The more open and honest you can be with your teen or teenager with Down syndrome, the safer they will feel. Once they understand, you will both feel better about this part of their lives.
Dating is something that young people with Down syndrome often want to try for themselves. There are certain social skills that are required for dating, and these skills can be taught as needed.
5. People With Human Diseases Can Get Married.
Marriage is not new for people with Down syndrome, but it is on the rise. Many scoff at this idea, and wonder how two people who still need help to work around the world can live together and take care of household chores, but it is possible.
The Wall Street Journal wrote an article about some of the marriages with Down syndrome.
“There is a growing need, while high schools and colleges are beginning to offer courses on sexuality and social skills related to young people with Down syndrome and other mental disabilities. “There is no reason to think that they have a brain problem. different emotions,” says William I. Cohen, who directs the Down syndrome Center of Western Pennsylvania at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. (Amy Marcus, Wall Street Journal, October 2005)
Marcus also recounts a conversation a girl with Down syndrome had with her mother about her upcoming marriage to a boy with Down syndrome:
“At one point, she raised the issue with her daughter: Wasn’t she worried that after they got married, Ms. Bergeron would have to take care of Mr. Desai?
“Don’t you care father? Sujeet’s mother doesn’t care for her husband? Isn’t that what women do?” her mother says Mrs. Bergeron responded. “They put me in my place,” Ms. Bergeron said. “I came back.”
Reproductive problems
Most men with Down syndrome are infertile (although not all). Many women have reduced fertility but remain fertile. It will be important to teach the family how to use birth control methods properly.
Romantic love and relationships can be a wonderful thing. There is no reason why people with Down syndrome should miss out on one of the greatest things in life, especially when they are naturally and mentally gifted. You just need to be careful to make sure your loved one with Down syndrome is prepared by teaching them about sex and all that it involves.
