Would I Dare Go to Kenya Again Travelling, Teaching and Lecturing, Risking the Various Dangers?

These three weeks in Kenya last month were full of joy, adventure, and emotional and spiritual challenges, but different questions arose, on my fourth trip to Africa in five years.

The main reason for returning to Kenya, was to teach at Seminars and Conferences for Pastors and Leaders in Nairobi, Kisumu and Bungoma. The attendance was good. These men try to get together and expect more. With three sessions of one and a half hours each day he gave the impression that he wanted more. He also asked for an extra day which was impossible.

Spending that first week at Nairobi’s East African School of Theology was a real bonus, as I met students every evening who kept asking me questions, and I learned a lot from them about how hard they work to finance their education. College. The College College’s small campus is located four kilometers east of the city center in the development district and is surrounded by supermarkets, banks and internet cafes.

I have never spoken to such a group in forty years of ordained ministry. They took me to Mathare, north of Nairobi, one of the worst slums in Kenya. No one told me what it was like before I went there. About half a million people are crammed into this terrifying city. The dirt roads are potholed and narrow with drunken boys on the forbidden shack they make for a barbecue. Some were using drugs and the driver had to take action to avoid missing a few.

I was visiting a ‘homeless’ project. I don’t know what being ‘homeless’ means in that context. When we see pockets of thousands of people living in them, what does ‘homelessness’ mean? Entering a small room, the group was often engaged in embroidery, beadwork, and soap making, in order to earn a little money.

The two pastors who work full time in the area took me to the Polytechnic where I spoke to 200 recovering alcoholics and rescued prostitutes.

I had a letter published in “The Standard” about Mathare. There are organizations that exist, with responsible leaders, that with additional financial support can do much faster.

Even Pastors would not dare to go out alone in Mathare at night, as they are robbed and robbed of phones, money, watches. Even the shoes are taken from the victim and sold. If the neighbors had witnessed this, the group would have been stoned. They seem to have their own justice. The police? They don’t enter Mathare after dark!

A trip to Kibos prison had been arranged. After meeting and praying with the Governor, who is also an orphan who has worked hard, I went to speak to 200 prisoners on ‘death row’. A chaplain was with me to interpret, but these men have their pastor – a prisoner who is also serving a life sentence for murder.

Five prisoners dressed in ‘zebra’ suits stood up to give their evidence. Their words were very touching. They too were waiting for the message for about an hour. A second ‘service’ for those convicted of petty crimes was held under the trees in the gymnasium. Guards with guns kept a watchful eye, but the men apparently accepted their arrest.

Prisoners in Kenya do not receive toilet paper or soap. I took the soap boxes explaining that soap washes the outside and the Blood of Jesus Christ washes the inside. The men clapped.

As in serving at Porterfield Prison in Inverness, Scotland, every week, one must always remember that there are victims out there.

Visiting Schools and Orphanages is another emotional attraction. The children are well behaved. They are dedicated and study hard under difficult conditions and teachers cannot be sure that they will be paid at the end of each month.

Then I spent a week in Kisumu, on beautiful Lake Victoria, and stayed at the Nyanza Club, a former colonial house, which still looks great.

The drive northwest from Kisumu to Bungoma took longer than we thought. The matatu driver decided to take a different route to avoid the potholes on the highway, but for several kilometers the tarmac was torn and progress was slow as we walked along the dirt track.

On the way back south, I suggested we try the highway. It was bad but not as bad as he described.

However, there were five roadblocks where the driver was expected to pay a small amount to get him off the road. I rolled down the window as we approached the first block. “Good afternoon. Kenyan police protecting the roads? My son is a policeman in Scotland.” “You’re on your way sir. Enjoy Kenya.” At the roadblock, a voice in the back of the matatu whispered, “Pastor Sandy, roll down your window!” The driver told me that I saved him five or six hundred rupees that day. Later he told me that the officers at the Police Station are waiting for the situation to decrease that day and if it decreases that these officers will be assigned another job the next morning.

I wondered what was the driver’s main reason for taking the dust route?

Kenya experienced political and ethnic unrest at the beginning of the year. Thousands of people were killed.

The roads were badly damaged during the so-called ‘skirmishes’, in January and February. Cars, which were placed on almost every road, were set on fire, melted on top of it, and the storm has destroyed everything else.

Businesses have been destroyed and many homes have been burned. The center of Kisumu, where many good buildings were burnt down, is still being rebuilt.

How do these people live? Prices have risen dramatically in the last two years.

People earn about £3 a day ($5). Life is tough living in the equatorial sun for 12 hours trying to sell your produce. The pastor’s wife, who lives in Kariobangi village in Nairobi, works as a ‘catheter’, preparing meals at a primary school. He walks five kilometers, then takes two buses to get to school, returning the journey at night. His salary is less than £3 ($5) a day.

Fathers who harvest sugarcane in the Mumias plantation near Bungoma work from 8am to 5pm in the scorching sun to earn more than £2 ($4) a day.

Listening to the BBC World Service’s excellent programs on Africa was very informative.

Africa is in turmoil. An Economics journalist said that the economic problems seen in America and Europe at the moment will affect businesses in Africa in three months. What would that mean?

The people of Nairn gave me money and I can say that the money was very important, it is left in the hands of trustworthy people to use it properly.

This was a walk and a high adventure, with different risks and different dangers, especially when I was training in the wild, a long distance from any medical care would be needed, but during these three weeks I didn’t even need paracetamol. . Can I do it again? Can I go one more time? Of course I would – if the conditions and circumstances were right!
