WWE Judgment Day 2009 PPV Review

From Rosemont, Illinois. Start date: 5/17/09

Umaga d. CM Punk, Samoan Spike — pin (***1/2).

What about Umaga fighting Pepsiman? However, the village rules are in effect here as Punk does the work, although it opened very well where there were many spots like G2S that were brought down to Samoa. I don’t understand WWE’s obsession with having their talent ALWAYS in their hometown, unless you’re Jim Ross, then you’re embarrassing yourself on a grand scale.

ECW Champion Christian d. Jack Swagger, tight fisted — pin (***1/2).

I really enjoyed this match and I loved when Christian jumped off the ropes on top of Swagger and ran to the other side haha… Old Christian. The end came when Swagger went for a gutwrench powerbomb, but Xian came out, he went for the killswitch, when Swagger left, then Xian did a rollup, with less FTW and to further the feud. I think Christian is the worst new player in the game. Kind of a lame ending, though. The worst Christian is never “popular” enough to succeed.

Meanwhile, Edge and Chavo argue. Edge told Chavo to do something about the wearer calling his aunt a pig. Edge is amazing and one of the best performers in WWE. They can create amazing medium advertising with the way they deliver.

John Morrison d. Shelton Benjamin, Starship Pain — pin (***).

Sadly Charlie Haas has given up on the viewing gimmick. Although I’m glad to see the World’s Greatest Tag Team reunite, The Great Charli > WGTT. Anyway, this was a good match, but there was something missing. Maybe it was the crowd; they don’t seem to be buying Nitro as a face. Anyhoo. good stuff at the end as both guys hit a nice spot and in the end Nitro wins with his flippy spinny indy move. Both guys need more time; they can put on a hell of a show.

The cheerleaders saw The Miz straight up jack Alfonso Soriano in the air and mention Jannetty (which was a hit), the Ducks, the Chicago Cubs & SMH. Then surprisingly, Santino saves Soriano and calls him The Fiz. Two of Raw’s most exciting wrestlers against each other? They should continue it. A Miz-Santino feud could be worth it.

Intercontinental Championship Rey Mysterio d. Chris Jericho w/ shorts, 619 — pin (***).

Jericho is starting to fade, back to his dirty and arrogant ways like his WCW days. However, Jericho throws Mysterio around the ring like a rag doll and Rey is so small compared to Jericho, I don’t think Y2J can make this feud work because of that. Anyhoo, the match would have been average if Jericho hadn’t traded with the ‘guarantee’ that there wouldn’t be a 619; gave a speech to the game. And I usually hate Mysterio matches, because they are so structured, but it was a good match, because of Jericho. Rey is a complete shell of her former self, however. Announcers talk about how he’s a “high flyer” but he’s not. Retire to travel 10 years from now.

Flying Batista d. WWE Champion Randy Orton pulls out his hair, attacks the referee — DQ (* 1/2).

Finally, a toilet break match. Orton may be fine, but he needs someone to help him, and that man is not Batista. The same goes for Batista. They just cancel each other out. However, there was a big hit for RKO and this was not a pro-DAVE group. The game just sucked the energy out of the show. Both of these guys are like characters from a video game. Repetitive movements, clumsy animations, more than normal maps, and sometimes suffer from lag. If Orton’s finish was a headlock, he would have won the entire match. The end came when Orton deliberately restrained himself, attacking the referee cheaply. A finish like that just makes you wonder why he didn’t fight the referee two seconds into the game and leave. After the match, Legacy came out to attack Big Dave, but the 90 year old man made the save. Wow. Dammit Flair, stay retired.

John Cena has a chance to win d. The Big Show, Attitude Adjustment — pin

.

I love how Cena looks like he’s about to cry when he’s down. The Cena Sucks song is as loud as it should be. And if I had a dollar for every time they said “No one inspires more emotion from the WWE Universe than John Cena.” and “The Worlds greatest athlete.” for this match alone i can buy WWE 100 times. And man, it’s amazing how quickly and dangerously this PPV changed from a possible annual PPV to say a slumber party. Anyhoo, in the end, Cena overcomes the odds and by God I was inspired! Miracles do happen! Boring game, though. So if Cena is Superman, does that make for a good match with the Big Show his kryptonite?

Global Competitive Edge d. Jeff Hardy, DDT off the top — pin (***).

This has always been a show where professionals come first. The end came when Matt Hardy interfered and attacked Jeff, in the form of Cowboy Bob Orton with a slingshot on his arm. This was a good match until Matt Hardy came out. Judgment Day is over and there is no Punishment or repayment, only credit. I think the village law still applies. However Edge is still the champion, so all is well with the world.

Man of the Night: Miz – he’s upped his game recently and I love it. We’ve needed to “get under your skin” the heel so badly; he’s annoying, yet you can’t stop watching because he talks new trash

Death Star of the Night: Flair – should be retired. I hope this is a one time thing, and he won’t go back to wrestling.

Match of the Night: Xian v. Swagger – the best game.

Worst Match of the Night: Cena v. Show – a boring game.

Jobber of the Night: Punk losing two PPVs back to back. Guess CM Punk didn’t drink Pepsi Natural before his match.

Squash of the Night: So the Legacy was completely undone by a 39-year-old non-wrestling wrestler and a 60-year-old retired wrestler. Good post, WWE. The only time I liked Legacy was when Orton kissed Stephanie since I wasn’t expecting it. Otherwise Legacy suffered from bad writing, bad marketing, and bad matches.

Explosive Zone Night: Mysterio took what looked like a nasty fall, although he looked better afterwards, but for a minute I thought he was gone.

Surprise of the Night: Edge-Hardy goes to the finals, and Punk doesn’t cash in.

It’s over: Matt Hardy’s run was unnecessary.

Most Emotional Moment: Cole and Lawler are shocked when Cena wins; “He went for the impossible…and somehow accomplished it!” / “Victory without fear!” / “Cena has made believers out of a lot of people tonight!”

Screw the Smarks: No Punk, and no pointless Matt to enter. WWE is dragging some of these stories out far too long.

Quotable Quotes: “That chair is always dangerous!” – Michael Cole in a WWE match.
