Book Review – The Kenya Diaries

I met Dale Garris in the Philippines in 2005. We were both speaking at a conference in western Mindanao. I have to admit, when I first heard that I was sharing a platform – and it’s American, right there! – I was smart. The message that God gave me to bring was a total commitment, and I did not want to end it with another preacher of faith. I didn’t have to worry. Dale’s message was the same as mine, and we traveled together as if we had been helping each other for years, rather than just meeting for the first time.

This was Dale’s first missionary experience. I laughed to myself many times as he struggled with the fun parts of life in a poor country. As the trip ended, he decided he would be happy to return home to Texas and never set foot in the “Good Ole US of A” again. Then I laughed to myself when he sent me an email saying that the Lord was calling him to go to Kenya. Since then he has returned twice, and has also served in Nigeria.

The book is the story of his first trip to Kenya, originally written as a journal that was sent home daily so family and friends could keep up with what he was doing. It’s raw and honest, and doesn’t try to sugarcoat things. Dale is an old school spokesman; I don’t think they can decorate things! What he experienced in Kenya was a cultural wonder. The Philippines had just begun to live outside the developed world. He summarizes at the beginning of Day 2: “This is a new experience for me. I’m looking down the long road that will be 30 days long, and I don’t know what will happen to me. I’m excited and a little scared. I feel that I’m almost there. doing work that I have never done before. I ask myself, ‘What on earth am I going to do? Have I come here?’ “

From the excitement of a third-world hotel that looked “more like a tired, faded picture of a hotel in the tropics with Humphrey Bogart”, to the baptism of the river where he sank in mud up to his thighs, to meetings where the Spirit of God it is poured out in an amazing power, we are right there with Dale in the pages of this book. We feel his joy and his exhaustion. We feel his confusion when things don’t go as planned, his frustration with “African time” (something every western missionary has to deal with) and his compassion for the unbelievable conditions in which people live.

More than that, we go on a spiritual journey: the journey of a man who begins to wonder why he goes to earth, and ends up saying (on the second to last page) “Now the burden is on me to return.” Dalen Garris did a great service in Kenya. He brought a new dimension of the Spirit to hungry hearts and opened them to the idea that there is more to the Christian life than they dreamed of, if they are willing to pay the price. Kenya also did a great service to Dale: it moved him in a different direction, introduced him to a new area of ​​ministry, and changed his heart forever to missions. For that alone, this book is worth reading.
