The Impossible Dream

What would you dare to dream if you knew you would never fail? A few weeks ago I was watching the NFL Draft. This is an annual event where the best College Football players in America are selected by the NFL to play the best football. While I was watching this there was one player that stood out to me. He was six feet five inches tall and weighed two hundred and sixty-five pounds. This was a very difficult person! That’s why his response to being elected caught my attention. He started crying! He was so moved that he couldn’t stand up when he called her name. What could make this brave man cry? He had achieved an impossible dream.

This was a dream he had since childhood. This was the dream that kept him awake at night. This was a dream he thought about every day. What is your wildest dream? I have realized that all impossible dreams have one thing in common. To achieve this you have to deal with what I call “Staggering Statistics”. A surprising number exists because often on the journey to your dreams you meet many people who share your ideals. This large group becomes a surprising number. For example, there are 9,000 people who play College football at the highest level. Of those 9,000, only 215 will be drafted into the NFL. Those are impressive numbers. Your dream could be to be the CEO of a fortune 500 company. A fortune 500 company has over 100,000 employees but only one CEO. Those are impressive numbers. So the question becomes how can I achieve my impossible dreams and beat amazing numbers? I’m going to share with you two things you need to make your dreams come true. This is what I call the “double freedom” of achieving dreams.

The first right to achieving dreams is the right mindset. The right philosophy is the belief that all things are possible. The right philosophy is important because impressive statistics will make your dreams impossible. The key to having the right philosophy is to identify and accept your purpose. Your purpose is what makes your dreams come true. We are all born with a future and a purpose to fulfill. Only you can achieve your true purpose. Knowing and accepting your purpose will lead you to the front of the line and allow you to beat the odds. This reminds me of my experience at the airport when I wanted to board a plane quickly. I arrived at the venue and found many people in line ahead of me trying to do what I was doing. I was sure I was going to miss my trip! Then I saw my good friend Paul near the front of the line. He beckoned me to come forward. We hugged, he let me in front of him, and I left. Our goal is like my friend Paul. When you know it and embrace it, it will move you to the front of the line and ahead of others who are trying to do what you are doing. Knowing and accepting your purpose will help you develop the right philosophy.

The second right to achieve dreams is to see clearly. The right perspective will come from choosing a mentor who has done what you are trying to do. Finding a good mentor has two benefits. First, you benefit directly from the mentors’ experiences and perspectives. Second, they will help you change your mind. This is important because sometimes our delayed dreams are the result of our inability to adapt. I am reminded of a you-tube video I saw the other day about a homeless blind man begging on the street. He had a sign in front of him that read “Help, I’m blind”. People passed by him every day without giving him money. This became a regular pattern. One day, a lady comes, turns her sign and writes something on it and walks away. Suddenly, people were reading what he wrote and giving money. His cup was now full of money. I watched this video in amazement and asked myself; “What’s on that sign?” Suddenly, the camera panned to a sign that changed to “It’s a Beautiful Day, and I Can’t See It”. The woman was an effective counselor for the blind man because she helped him change his mind. As soon as he changed the shape he was able to change the results. When we have the right mindset, we will get closer to our dreams.

The first right to achieve dreams is right wisdom, the second right is right. As I close I am reminded of the story of a young man named Craig that brings these two points home. Craig had a difficult childhood. He spoke straight and spoke softly. He was always teased by other children about the way he spoke. Then things took a turn for the worse for Craig. When he was ten years old, he was told by his father’s friend that when he spoke, he sounded like Daffy Duck and should be quiet. This event affected him deeply and he tried to avoid speaking in front of people. Well, this sad story has a happy ending. In 1999 Craig won the Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking and today Craig Valentine is a successful motivational speaker who speaks all over the world. What was Craig’s secret to success? First, he had the right philosophy. Craig’s dream was to win a world championship and he believed it was possible even if everyone laughed at him. Again he had the right perspective. Craig wanted to be a world champion so he chose a mentor who was a world champion. The mentor helped him change his mind, overcome impressive numbers, and achieve his dreams. I have good news for you today. If it worked for Craig, it will work for you. If you have the right philosophy and the right mindset, you can achieve impossible dreams.
