Ephesians 4:22 That Ye Put Off Concerning the Former Conversation the Old Man

I must say that I am always grateful for every email I receive, whether it is good or bad, because everything is difficult and there is no reason to misuse the above verse of the Holy Scriptures.

First, however, a small background of this letter to the Ephesians, because according to Adam Clarke’s commentary there are some scholars who believe that this letter was written to Alaodikaya and/or possibly to all the churches. If so, and we connect in Ephesians 4 with the strong things that the Lord says to Laodicea in Revelation 3, we can come to realize that Paul had serious problems with other brothers in these churches. In fact, if we examine the letters of Paul all together, in most cases, we must admit that he was dealing with members of the problem and people who were very lost in the context of all those associations. In addition, another proof of this letter being two letters in one is found at the end of chapter 3 where there is an amen. I would therefore say that the second half of this letter was really a letter to Laodicea.

Well, having laid that little foundation and without further ado I will explain, first, how these Holy Scriptures have been misused. The concerned person used it as if it applies to born again sons and daughters of God or all Christians. One constant development is consistent with all the blasphemous and reprehensible Christian methods of teaching God’s Holy Word – no grace. He also used it to test and refute what I teach about our sinful bodies, even though we are born again. If our sinful bodies do not sin why do we need grace? This man, however, was something else entirely, he was the first, he wanted to show me how he could stop sinning. Boy, this is one special one and he used these Holy Scriptures to tell me to undress my old self after he was already dead. He died in a watery grave, but this man does not understand the original truth. You see, in this man his old self is still alive, so he has made his wonderful plan of full sin. Who needs Jesus Christ when you can do it all by yourself!!??

This means that he used the above passage in a loose sense because there is no way it means what he thinks it means. Now if we do that with other Holy Scriptures we will do all the same thing; spiritually harassing and putting pressure on those around us – our brothers and sisters. Fortunately, for me, I can smell these people a mile away and quickly push them away before they get too close; figuratively speaking, of course. So let’s look at the previous verses of Ephesians 4 to understand what Paul was struggling with.

Ephesians 4:1 Therefore, I, the prisoner of the Lord, ask you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.

Wow! There is an opening that sets the scene, and it ties in with what I said above about the problems in the churches, and what does this passage tell us? In short, he tells us that there is a problem with this group of Gentile Christians, because Paul is pleading with them or pleading with them to walk properly in their calling. Now what kind of Christians need such encouragement and/or written instruction? Simply put, those who do not walk properly, but what does “not walking properly” mean? Do they just sin or do they sin with the heart and what do I mean when I say “sin with the heart”? Again it’s simple; they would have had a wrong view of their sinful ways. Basically the problem was this; they were sinning or sinning as they did before they were called, so they were suppressing the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ or mocking his sacrifice and this is what it means to “not walk properly” or have a wrong attitude towards sin. They were sinning without thinking about what they were doing. This was the problem that Paul was dealing with here.

As an aside the word ‘prisoner of the Lord’ here means ‘bound in the Lord’ from the Greek which can be better translated as ‘surrender’ or ‘total involvement with the Lord’. We are brothers of the Lord Jesus Christ and brothers are not prisoners.

Ephesians 4:2-3 with all humility and meekness, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 Try to keep the unity of the Spirit and the bond of peace.

Paul now goes to the qualities of humility or humility and meekness which means strength under authority and tolerance and/or patience to tolerate one another in godly love. So this must mean that there were people in these churches who did not show signs of these behaviors, so they were in a very bad shape, Spiritually, and apparently they deserved Paul’s advice. What I will emphasize here is this: What do these requests have to do with the born-again sons or daughters of God? No, nothing, nothing! They only talk about adulterous sons or daughters who do not show these qualities and are mocking Jehovah’s sacrifice.

Ephesians 4:3-6 BL92 – Striving to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body, and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and in all, and in all of you.

From verse 3 we can say that they were quarreling and were not at peace with each other, so it was a conflicted relationship and maybe it is about to split. In verses 4 and 5 Paul should also teach them the basics, telling them that they were called with the hope of their future and/or that great things were expected of them, so apparently, again, there were no signs of these hopes shining on them. – no fruits. In verse 5, Paul tells them some facts; things they should have known before. What we can also begin to see here is a church with a large number of Spiritual babies in its midst which would explain why their callings are mentioned with hopes and expectations attached.

Eph 4:7 But to each of us grace has been given, according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Paul then confirms that the Lord Jesus Christ gave them enough grace that they had no excuse. I will now jump to verses 11-13

Eph 4:11-13 And he gave others to be apostles; and other prophets; and other preachers; and other pastors and teachers; 12 That the saints may be fulfilled, to the work of service, to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach the unity of faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect person. , to measure the height of the fullness of Christ.

Again we have evidence of how early this church is, because much maturity and gaining knowledge is yet to take place. Please note that the words ‘perfect’ and ‘perfect’ are not properly translated here, because we are made perfect at Baptism and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. An examination of the Greek manuscripts will show that when the translators used the words ‘perfect’ and ‘perfect’ they should be read. ‘down equipping’ for maintenance and ‘mature’ to the perfect. These are very deceptive examples of interpreters trying to convince you that ‘perfecting the saints’ is the way, when in Truth perfection comes with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Also, maturity is growth, it is not perfection, because some of us will be more mature than others, but that immaturity will not interfere with our place in Christ. Our salvation is guaranteed if we continue to believe and grow in faith. Also, everything depends on what we have been given in the first place, because from those who have been given much, much will be expected. Please read the parable of the talents for more information in Matthew 25:15-30.

Eph 4:14-15 that we from now on be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried away by every wind of doctrine, and the cunning of men; and that crafty cunning, in which they lie to deceive; 15 But to speak the truth in love, let us grow in all things to him who is the head. though Christ.

Here we find confirmation of what I have been saying. This church had many spiritual babies; for Paul said to them, do not be deceived by the false teaching of religious people lying in wait, ready to lead them astray. It’s the same today people, so what are you going to do about it? Be there every week to listen to their message that is not salvation by works until the Lord Jesus Christ will come again to be told: “Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.” It’s really up to you; take that bold step and the Lord Jesus Christ will do something else, because it is time for us to grow in Him in all things, who is the head, even Christ.

Ephesians 4:17-21 Therefore I say this, and I testify in the Lord, that you do not walk as other nations walk, in the foolishness of their hearts; they are among them, because of the blindness of their hearts: 19 who, being unfeeling, give themselves up to adultery, to committing all abominations and greed. 20 But you did not study Christ like that; 21 If you heard him, and were taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus.

Here we can see, as I said earlier, that he was walking as if he was still in the world, still in the vanity and the dark thoughts and separation from God once again in darkness. Note the word blindness in reference to the lost and unsaved here; proving again that the lost can be lost until the Father opens his eyes to see His Son. Paul then reminds them that they were not taught that way, they were taught Christ and if they heard Him ie through the Holy Spirit, they are in the Truth because the Lord Jesus Christ is the Truth. Again this is the beginning that he should have understood, but it is treated improperly, hence we have the title verse:

Eph 4:22-24 to put off, speaking of the first steps, the old man, rotten according to deceitful desires; 23 And be new in the spirit of your heart; 24 and put on a new man, who was created according to God in righteousness and true holiness.

These verses are about reformation and when I say reformation I mean reformation, not the Mickey Mouse reformation of mainstream Christianity that has meaningless reformations every two weeks. These people had gone astray, they were backsliders and Paul told them directly that they would strip the old man who had also stripped him. This is what Paul is saying here. This passage has nothing to do with faithful believers because they have already put off their old self and did so at baptism. The old man dies in a watery grave – kaput not to be seen again if we become like these foolish Ephesians and return to our old ways, but not only that, but do it without a thought to our Savior or to our calling. inappropriately.
