Discussion: Mike Matheny Letter to Parents of Youth Baseball

Mike has a strong personality and shares his strengths with the players he coaches. I agree with about 80% of what you said in the letter to parents. I will offer my thoughts on a few things that I think Mike will understand.

When I was in the mud with my players, I had little trouble with any parents. The ages of the boys I was given the responsibility of teaching were between 12-15 years old. Before that, I was in a group of other coaches and worked mainly with my son Jeff.

I met with the parents with a leaflet and explained the rules similar to what Mike says about the responsibilities of players and parents. I had my parents directly involved in my program and they were part of the success. The group needed help with fundraising and travel arrangements. We were a baseball family and with the help of my coaches and fellow coaches we were a dangerous team. We weren’t an experimental group like most travel groups in St. I had all the local boys and we had a lot of success and always managed to win or compete with the teams that were selected.

My concern with Mike is emotional. I don’t see a player who is a competitor who shakes his back on the diamond unable to show emotion. I teach my players that when you make a tag you have to sell it. I am very competitive and many young athletes are the same. If there is a play at second base and the runner is out, that player should not show emotion and stupidity! What needs to be done is for the coach to allow the players to show emotion but not to show the referee, by arguing. The players will not argue with the umpires, the players can say “I got him” and then walk away leaving the coach to solve the problem. That’s what a good coach wants, and he has to go to the umpire firmly and say I think you didn’t call it. Then smile and listen to what he has to say and then go back to the board. I think this is a good way to manage the youth group in this regard.

This level of baseball in my opinion is all about player development. I told my players and parents that I am preparing my players for high school and beyond. I didn’t worry about the player calls because I like to play the game properly. We had a play where my third baseman jumped to his left and threw from his knees to first; the ball was in the dirt but it was washed away. The umpire said the runner was safe. My coaches panicked, I quickly calmed them down and told them that Ross and Brett did everything right. It was a great ball!

I can’t imagine baseball fans being so quiet about not paying support to the players. I wouldn’t expect my parents or fans to do something like this at a game. What should not be allowed is any argument with the referee or swearing at the other team. When I was in the dirt, I always watched the referees and I always respected the men in blue. Head coaches you need to understand that you are the leader of your entire baseball family. I can’t imagine “Let’s go, you can do it” adds pressure to the player. I think this shows support for the players and the team. I can’t imagine being at a baseball game and not hearing the fans cheering for the players.

Mike also writes about losing respect because kids hear their parents complain about teachers or coaches. Mike goes on to say that his father taught him that a teacher is always right, even when he is wrong. I don’t agree with that at all, I wouldn’t want my child to be a robot so he can’t think for himself and agree with the teacher who is wrong. I think we need more people to stand up and say right from wrong. I have to say, this is one of the reasons why I started this business and managed education at every level. I think the game of baseball should be played very well, and the reason it is not good, is because it is not well coached. I see a lot of mistakes in the big leagues that shouldn’t happen. I’m going to talk about the little things and the important things that major league players need to know. I have many veterans who feel the same way I do about this.

Finally, we need baseball coaches who are hardworking, honest, reliable, and experienced in teaching the game. Mike is one of these coaches and I disagree with him on the philosophy of the game.
