Ayurvedic Massage Therapy in India – Part One

I have come on a trip to India to find out if it is possible to cure all my ailments (extra kilos / fluctuating but mostly high blood pressure / high cholesterol and maybe more) in two weeks.

I have heard about Ayurvedic medicine and the positive results other people have experienced, so I am at the Sagara Resort in Kovalam Beach in Kerala, waiting to see a doctor.

The place is very interesting as the work is progressing. It seems that it all started with a few rooms and then the owner built more and more until it stands today, it’s almost finished! In fact, the main pool has just been completed and all that is left is the tiling which is expected to be completed during our stay. Workers (actually good workers, as I don’t believe there are women construction workers in India) are everywhere and they are working around the clock. They run around with towels tied around their heads in which they carry baskets of stones to fill the front road that is being built. Labor is cheap and machinery expensive, so it follows that this is the way to make the most money. But it is difficult in the hot afternoon sun!

We often see the owner of the place, a beautiful, interesting and loving person, who lives nearby and, the workers tell me, is humble enough to do any work that needs to be done. If a servant is sick, he cheerfully pushes in, preparing a room on his own for new arrivals. Similarly, they are more than happy to be a waiter or kitchen worker in a hotel restaurant. He is a very interesting person who deserves to do very well.

We have been given a beautiful room with a large bedroom, a bathroom with a shower, a living room / dining room and a balcony. Being attached to a cable television that only matched my understanding of Malayalam (the local language) was not. We have great views of Kovalam Beach and the lighthouse that stands proudly.

Day two and I have my first appointment with an Ayurvedic doctor (Dr. Jayahari). He is young and very friendly, and he is very fond of Ayurveda. He spends a lot of time drawing pictures on paper while explaining the history of Ayurvedic medicine to us.

He immediately captivates me – he asks me about body systems that are long gone. I ask him how old he thinks I am and he says twenty years younger than I am. How good is that? They would be my friends (and enemies) to hear! Drat!

They ask me about my dreams and my favorite weather. This is how I find my body type. It can be one of the three types or a combination of the three. Called the doshas, these types are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. I’m Vata/ Kapha dosha. Since Kapha is fat, I have too much Kapha – to put it bluntly.

They measure me and take my blood pressure – it’s 130 for something or other and then they feel my pulse (on my arm). He tells me that my high cholesterol is caused by excess fat in my body and that his first plan of attack will be a massage. This will be the first step to lose weight!

He tells me that by the next day he will have a prescription for fourteen days.

Hmm, a foot rub…how good! This can’t be bad at all. I am very impressed with the exfoliating foot massage.

I come back at 2pm to wash my feet. I have a problem with massage because some masseurs touch so hard that I can go through the roof and push and push. But a food massage is worth the effort and I just love the way my feet feel afterwards.

At the appointed time I am shown into the reception room. My first thought is that I am experiencing a “Wire in the Blood” episode. Hanging from the ceiling of the tiled room is a rope. I have vision to be strengthened but I blink and look around me. There is also a massage table with a copper pot on a stand.

The masseuse came and told me to take off all my clothes. All of them? Yes, all of them. No!

Now why do I have to be naked to get off my feet? I just knew that there were perverse things in this room. The cable was a dead giveaway.

Well, I have to explain to the world about this and how kinky it is, the more I reckon everyone will love hearing about it, so I obediently undress, sit on the stool and cross my legs.

The treatment begins with head massage. She sprinkles oil on my head and shoulders and rubs it off for five minutes. I have been completely lulled into a false sense of security.

Then they ask me to lie down on the exercise mat under the rope. I lie on my stomach and he starts rubbing (rather hard) my back and arms. But what about my massage?

I peeked and saw him, hanging on the rope with one hand, holding the wall with the other while rubbing my body with one foot. And what a strong foot he has! I have to ask him to explain. He massages me from top to bottom, from back to front. I am completely burnt in yellow oil. So THAT is a foot massage!

Now they are asking me to lie on the massage table. It’s not easy to have a conversation in the room when I’m fueled but I manage. It’s also hard to get on the bed without shooting off the edge like a well-oiled rocket. Then she gives me another long massage – this time with a hand.

He happily tells me that if I take this medicine every day my fat will melt.

So here’s how to change the oil without lifting a finger! Oh, I mean don’t lift a finger! I have often wondered if it is possible to lose weight with massage. It should be a long and intense massage – every day of the week! But who can afford these things?

However, the treatment is not over. He pulls the top of the copper pot onto the rack and fills it with warm oil. My head is under the pot and slowly the oil drips through the hole in the bottom of the pot. This is Shirodhara – a remedy known to open the third eye. They move the pot and the oil drips in a stream on my forehead for twenty minutes. What a joy!

The whole process takes two hours and as you can imagine, I’m covered in oil.

In the meantime I have been thinking about a worrying problem that I see coming. So, big as I am now, I have to get into my red caftan when I go back to my room. But she puts my caftan in a bag and gives me a green hospital gown. They tell me to wear it around when I go to the hospital. Thank goodness for that.

The masseuse tells me to wait an hour before showering and because my hair is dripping with thick oil, I have to wash my hair as well. This should be a daily ritual. I personally find washing my hair on a daily basis to be a chore so I am relieved to find that there is no shampoo or conditioner in the bathroom. Fortunately, once in our lives, we have brought a few hotel bottles that we have saved from previous vacations, but we find that there is no hotel (at our prices) in the whole of Kerala, that offers hair. medicine. Later Biju (our driver) tells us that this is because people in Kerala only use coconut oil in their hair. (But will this also clean their hair, I wonder?)

I wondered if my mother would get the same treatment as me. However, she did not receive a foot massage. Maybe this is stored for fat. Later the doctor tells us that because of my mother’s age (80) he thought it was too boring for her.

This is one third.
