Background Character to Prime Time Player

Have you ever created a character that was blah, maybe even boring? I mean obviously, at some point it must have served a purpose, or you wouldn’t have created it. Right? But what are you going to do with them now? Remove it? Some writers just love to kill off characters in their stories. Do you mention them in passing, back in chapter 3, and never see them again? Are they *Don’t worry* nameless, faceless, and homeless?

You passed an older, white-haired man in baggy old jeans and a baseball cap and you thought, “Dude, that guy sure wasn’t much.” He may be driving an old beat-up truck with a dog named “Old Roy,” riding in the back. If this happened in 1990, you may not have noticed that you passed a Billionaire named, “Sam Walton.”

Strangely enough, he did not have a heavenly aura around him, and he did not wear a neon sign on his back that read, “Owner and Founder of Wal-Mart, Inc.” He wasn’t very tall, he didn’t have big broad shoulders, in fact, it would be more accurate to say that he was average looking.

To be honest, not all people are heroes, leading ladies, or villains. We don’t always think highly of someone we think is moral. (Unless your name happens to be Sir Conan Doyle.) Doyle had a gift for realizing that even the most boring, seemingly insignificant detail could solve the whole mystery. I want to show you that you can do the same with your characters.

The trick is not to give it all at once. Consider this example: Chapter 1 – a girl doesn’t like her father, Chapter 10 – the reader discovers the girls her father beats her, Chapter 18 – A girl grows up to become a martial arts teacher, Chapter 24 – A girl finds her father doing the same to her sister, Chapter 30 – Girl beats dad to within an inch of his life.

At the beginning of this story, the girl who does not like her father is not unusual. Personally, the reader may think, “So?” When you find out that dad is beating him, you might think, “Oh, that makes sense.” When you get to the point of becoming a martial arts instructor, you might ask yourself, “Did this have anything to do with dad?” When you get to the part where it shows that he did it again, many will think, “Oh, he’s bad, someone needs to teach him a lesson.” Towards the end when he beats her, one might think, “YES, you go, girl!” or “I’m glad she stood up for him.” Did you see what we did there? He went from a stone to a hero in the story’s length.

I once created a character who had an emotional connection with another character. I already had my characters, and NONE of them had any kind of unusual gifts. At the time I was writing the description, I remember thinking, “Why am I doing this? He’s not everybody. Boy, was I wrong? Little by little he became a famous person and took me to another path.

If you are a writer, there is no danger (or there shouldn’t be.) When you get to the point of your mystery, love, or crime you have to introduce a new enemy or protagonist; I would say, giving some nameless, worthless, homeless person a chance to achieve their goals. Sometimes you may need to go back and make pictures or lines here and there, to show the reader that they were there all along. Help your readers realize that no one is as important as others think. The people mentioned in the past may not be Billionaires who can change the world… But on the other hand, you never know.
