Fishing Strip Pits, Fishing Grave Pits

I already know what you’re thinking, warm weather and clean water! Indiana Gravel and Strip pit fishing.

Fishing in these holes can be very frustrating, and sometimes impossible. We’ve all been skunked at one point or another. I will give you what I have learned from fishing these areas.

First you need to learn to put-out of the hole. Line pits consist of direct drops and vertical banks from where they blasted the land. Most of these have been reclaimed and spawning grounds have been increased (shallow water). In these pits, they just took a big shovel after blasting and carrying coal in trucks. Sometimes you can find old roads where full trucks go in and out of the ditch.

Anything different can catch fish. Underwater structures, knots, pockets in weeds.

Gravel pits are usually deep (they can be shallow), and if you look around you can guess where the roads went in and out of the pits. These old roads are perfect for Indiana’s big buses. Do not forget that knots, rows of grass, bags are good places. Keep these areas in mind when fishing these holes.

To continue with the basics. All the pros will tell you to lighten your strings and use the lightest string you can get through. It’s fine if you want to catch a lot of small fish, but if you want good fish use Muskie size baits! Sure, you won’t catch a lot of fish, but what you will catch will be good fish instead of all the dinky ones.

Noise and vibration can make a difference in sales. One night while fishing for bass I fished a spinnerbait for an hour, hung it in a tree and lost the blade. Being too lazy to go back to a new bait, I started casting it without a blade and the fish loved it! I have never caught a bass on a spinnerbait in that lake.

Try night bass fishing. At night you can use floating baits like Rapala and do very well. If you are catching a lot of small ones switch to bigger baits. At night I walk the banks looking for fast fish. Worms pre-rigged rigged wacky style are excellent baits. I’ll also use a 6 to 12 inch Texas worm with an attached hook to cast into trees, limbs, and other obvious spots. Remember to hit the old roads, the buses will use them as a highway when they want to eat.

Basically the only two types of bait I use at night are black or white, as the fish prefer. Crappie and pan fish in Indiana rocks and bare pits. Crappie disperse after spawning and can be found in weed lines and low structures. You have to be stealthy because all freshwater fish are easily caught. The best bait to use is a bobber and minnows.

Live bait is the best choice of bait for all fish. Use minnows for bluegill and bass, shiners for bass, small live bluegill or goldfish for flathead catfish, and shad, creek chubs for Muskie. Muskie lives in other lakes.

Night fishing is a plus, and use big baits. No matter what it is, use big Muskie lures!

Best of all, night fishing can increase your chances of catching big Indiana bass, big Indiana muskie, big Indiana walleye, bull bluegill and slab crappie. Just remember that fish can break easily in clean water! If the fish on the bank are going soft and keep a low profile!
