Gym Etiquette in Spain

I recently joined a gym in Spain. I call it a gym, but by UK standards it’s a resort. In fact, when you enter through the double doors, if it weren’t for the sunlight coming through the glass, you could easily return to the UK. The gym itself has the same equipment as a leisure center in the UK. There are no TVs but the radio plays in the background. Although, the Spanish are very open and like to talk, in practice they just go to business like in the UK. Everyone is focused on their body and their machine, and there is little interaction between users of the gym.

I go in the morning. They tend to be older people, retired men and women in their fifties and sixties. There are a few young people who appear to be of an educated age. You can also see the odd thirty or two women.

Gym etiquette isn’t too different from the UK, although you have to be a bit more relaxed as people can be a bit inconsiderate. You must bring a towel for hygiene reasons. There is a fifteen minute timer for each instrument. If you are not careful or serious enough, people will take advantage and stay longer, pretending it doesn’t exist.

The same goes for waiting for equipment. You have to be careful because people are quick to get up and jump on the machine you’ve been waiting for ten minutes. Pretending they didn’t see you is their trick. Sometimes I wonder how they can miss me with a lime green top and a back that could be considered a hindrance, but they do.

I’ve been fine. The first training session I had took about three hours, two of which were spent waiting for equipment. Soon I realized that I had to stop being polite and let people know that I was serious. When you encounter several people breathing down your neck or interrupting you by sticking their heads in your seat to check your time, just join the group.

The women are very clean. In fact, I believe they feel guilty for neglecting their homes when they go to the gym. So when they’re at the gym, they’re grabbing paper towels and scrubbers to wash the gear all the time, make sure you get the women’s gear because no one bothers. They probably think that’s why there are women in the gym, to clean the equipment after them.

As for the changing rooms, they are very transparent. If you’re shy, prepare to be the only one making a big mess with your towel around you. I don’t know what happens in the men’s changing rooms but in the women’s there are all kinds of bodies floating around. Spanish people are very comfortable with genitalia regardless of age or shape.

All in all, it’s not too different from UK gyms and you get the same ideas including squats and lunges, great forms of exercise at the same time during the day. I’ll have to try the fitness classes for this experience!
