What Do Titles of To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye and Great Gatsby Say About the Novels?
Everyone knows that it is wrong to judge a book by its cover, but there is no consensus that advises not to judge a book by its title. But what if we do? What does the title of a book really tell the reader about the people or story within it?
Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice was originally supposed to be called First Impressions. Would his best-known novel still be a favorite many years later if it still holds its appeal? The genius of Pride and Prejudice is that both characters in the title can be said to be Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Darcy immediately resents Hertfordshire for his arrogant ways, and Elizabeth seems to hate him from the start, but isn’t it Darcy’s prejudice against the Bennet family that prevents him from acknowledging his feelings for Elizabeth? And isn’t it Elizabeth’s pride that prevents her from accepting Darcy’s first proposal? Many inferences could not be made from the title First Impressions.
The title of To Kill a Mockingbird almost doesn’t make sense, even to someone who has read the book (or seen the movie). The reader has to pay close attention to the discussion to see the mention of the topic. To Kill a Mockingbird has quite a few lines, and it’s surprising that one of the most famous lines of To Kill a Mockingbird isn’t the titular line, “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” Literally, the word means nothing, but when applied to certain events in the story, it is a comment on who should be chosen to represent, which is the main theme of the book.
The Great Gatsby is a wonderful title, but it is misleading to begin with, because it implies that this great Gatsby character is the protagonist of the novel, when in fact it is Nick Carraway. Not to go into the depth of the Great Gatsby summary, but Gatsby does not live to see the end of the book that bears his name.
The Catcher in the Rye is also misleading. It is long overdue for readers to learn why JD Salinger chose that title for his novel. One might think that the Catcher in the Rye is the narrator of the story, but in fact the narrator is a confused, often annoying young man named Holden Caulfield. Unable to cope with the unexpected death of his brother Allie, Holden becomes obsessed with the idea of saving things and wants to be the “catcher in the rye” who saves young children from falling off a cliff. Holden puts on a big show of not caring about anyone, but ends his story with the sweetest quote from Catcher in the Rye, “Don’t tell anyone anything. If you do, you start missing everyone.” This quote confirms that Holden is afraid to get close to someone again because he knows how hard it is to lose someone you love. It doesn’t make him less angry, but it makes him kinder.
