Writer’s Block – Or Writer’s Overload?

SLAM! Just when you thought you had it all figured out, that blank wall interrupted you!

There you were, all nice and relaxed in front of your latest post, all organized and ready to write! And he waited. And he waited. And he waited. Forever, it seemed. SOMETHING!

After what seemed like an eternity, you turned off the computer in disgust, returned your neatly labeled container to its velvet lined box, and returned to the world of the living.

To be shed. Frustrated. Disorganized. Disgusted.

What a waste, I’m not a writer. Heck, writers go through this a mile a minute. Me? An old, shaky donkey can beat me on days like today.

And there have been altogether too many days like this, for my liking. Maybe I shouldn’t be doing this kind of work. Maybe mom was right: “Be a dentist,” she said. But NO! I knew in my heart that I am a WRITER!!!

Sound good? Some of the details are subject to change, but I promise you that you’ve had the same type of block several times before.

And every time, you leave the trade, feeling lower than a snail’s left knee.

Take heart! You are not alone. Thousands of writers and writers who would be rocking themselves in waves on the same wall. Some allow it.

Do you want something to cook with it?”

Some finally find the key. But they don’t share.

Let’s take a look at what you call your “Writer’s Block.”

There are two sides.

First, we’ve decided who’s the biggest problem: Your inner critic and monitor, working extra hard to keep you from being “more creative”.

The rest is subtle, but real: you may be suffering from “information overload”.

Let me explain.

If you take a closer look at what you’ve been going through, you’ll probably find that one of the reasons you’ve been stuck writing is NOT a lack of ideas. It is exactly the opposite.

I bet that if you are honest with yourself, you will find that the thoughts come to you both and very much. Your problem, and the reason you’re stuck, is because you’re struggling to sort out all those ideas and topics.

At the risk of boring you, please allow me to tell you a little story as a way to illustrate my point.

Imagine you are in a windowless room. In front of you is a blank wall with a door with an ornate door handle. As you look around the room, you notice that all the walls are empty, featureless, featureless. A soft light fills the room and just washes away the darkness. In one corner of this empty room, you see a good-looking old man in green shades, his hands in the air, staring into the glass bottom of a coke bottle on the blackboard he’s holding in his arthritic hands. . The painting is decorated with hand-made rubber stamps of various colors and sizes, and, surprisingly, each one has the same words on its stamp: “Rejected. Not suitable.” This little guy is also wearing a big, red button that says different characters, “Mental Story Idea Selector.” Your roommate ignores you, but you notice and realize that this old man is yours, your news filter.

You step forward, extend your hand, turn the door handle and the door swings open. At the open door, you see a large meadow filled with bright yellow flowers that are gently swaying in the light breeze. There is music in the air from unseen sources. The lake runs quite a distance. You can see that the meadow is bordered by a forest of impressive and colorful pine trees. Behind the pine trees, you can see the tall blue mountains. Snow covers the mountain tops.

All is quiet.

You shout, “Any ideas here? Anyone??”

No more words come out of your mouth when from among the delightful flowers jump a multitude of slaves, spotted, hairy, thin, green, brown, with teeth of all colors and sizes from the beautiful meadow, and from even as far away as the farthest pine trees. Each of these unclean objects is holding some kind of large, heavy, pointed or round weapon. Shaking the earth, and mixing flowers to use for coffee, he rushes to you without a sound.

You knock on the door just in time.

You hear a lot of banging as the monsters collide. They are kicking the door furiously, trying to get out.

Those thoughts are ready to do you a great disservice!

The door groans from the strain of those thoughts. As you look on in shock, the door opens for a deadly attack. You are scared. There, caught in the door are the thoughts of the mind, their hands joined, their legs locked together, and they are hanging on the inaccessible road, all trying to pass through the small door at the same time.

Your Emotional Story Selector, ignoring the open door, looks around the empty room and says, “There’s no leading idea here!!”

You look helplessly at the door, and to your horror, you notice that the door frame has started to shrink. The proposal is being pressed again.

Again, your Mental Story Idea Selector looks around and loudly announces, “Nope, no ideas!!” Then your Mental Story Idea Selector extends its hand and without looking, closes the door.

“Well, guess we’ll call it a day. Nothing here. No thoughts. Nothing at all! Maybe we’ll be lucky tomorrow.”

You watch helplessly as your Mental Story Idea Choice exits the room through another door that has magically appeared in the adjacent wall, leaving you alone.

And you call it Writer’s Block!
