Reflections on You’re Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins
Well, it took me months to buy Trace Adkins Greatest Hits volume II “American Man.” I listen to all kinds of music, including country and I’ve always loved Adkins, but the main reason I bought this CD was the song “You’re Gonna Miss This.” I remember hearing this song a few times on the radio earlier in the year, and of course I watched Adkins sing it at the end of Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice.” I hadn’t heard this song in a long time and I bought the CD and listened to it several times already.
It was the lyrics of this song that really touched me. The first episode is about a girl who can’t wait to grow up and her mother tells her that she will miss this. The second episode has the girl as a new bride telling her father that the small house is only temporary while talking about babies and the big house, etc. His father tells him to slow down, he’s going to miss this. The final scene is five years later with the woman apologizing to the plumber for her busy house with a phone ringing, a baby crying, and another baby screaming. He tells her it doesn’t matter since he has two children of his own, one 36 and the other 23. He tells her it’s hard to believe, but you’re going to miss this.
The rhyme after each verse is:
You will miss this
You want this back
You need these days
He didn’t go through that fast
These are good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you will miss this
Wow Trace, this song reminds me of another song on the CD, “Songs About Me.” But this song is for all of us.
I find myself thinking back to my childhood. Man, I wanted to grow up and leave high school and leave home when I was a kid. Boy do I miss some of those days when I look back. I remember that sometimes I hated the military. FTA was a battle cry that didn’t mean “Follow Top Instructions” as my friend told First Sgt. (Above) one day when he was caught writing initials in the snow outside the barracks. I remember times in college, in Japan, in Korea, often in law school, where I didn’t want to be, how I wanted things to change. Now I look back and I miss so many times. Well, maybe not law school, but it doesn’t seem as bad now as I thought at the time.
Now that I am a father, these lessons come to my heart. My little girl, Cosette, is four years old and has just started primary school. He is growing up very fast and I already missed him some days when he was little. I still enjoy the new things we do every day, especially because he is like his father in that he loves books. He is working hard to learn to read and write. On the first day of primary school, he told his teacher that he still couldn’t read well. His teachers told him it was fine, and told my wife and I that it wasn’t until kindergarten that they started teaching zoophonics, a method of learning letter sounds and phonemic reading. I thought to myself, “He already knows the sounds of all the letters, by next year and kindergarten he will be reading. I think he will be ahead of the curve like I was.”
So, although I am very happy to help him read and write, I also miss some things from when he was little that are now gone.
But here’s the kicker. Sometimes I get overwhelmed with work, bills, writing assignments, my teaching and other goals that I have to accomplish, which shortens the time I have. For example, tonight, I have a little time to come home from work, eat, hang out with her, and then go to the gym to practice and practice hapkido. I think about Adkins’ song and realize I’m going to miss this. I will miss these moments so I have to make sure to take as much time as I can because it will go by so fast.
Everyone tells young people that time goes by faster as you get older. They do it because it is true. Every year goes by faster than before. It makes the lesson of “The time is now, the place is here,” which Dan Millman teaches in his Peace Soldier course, even more important. Not that they aren’t always important, but as you get older you care more.
Or you should. Some people don’t, and that’s sad. Because they are the ones who will probably be missed the most. What do you miss? Miss life. I recently wrote about life, after hearing about a 41-year-old relative of a friend who died of a heart attack. We must not miss life. We shouldn’t be too eager to get to the next level, because believe me, it’s coming as fast as it is, so if you’re lucky enough to get to the next level. Many people write about this concept in different ways. I have written on this topic and talked about it. I hope to continue to write and speak on this topic in the future in various ways. Why? Because they are important. It is very important! I thank Trace Adkins for recording this song written by Lee Thomas Miller and Ashley Gorley to remind us of the importance of being alive and living in the moment. To enjoy what we have, because we will miss it. There are other songs, other books, other studies on the same topic, and I will probably write about them in the future. I’m glad I bought a CD of another song I need to record. But that is for another day.
Right now, remember, the time is now, the place is here. Live life. Live now. Looking back, “You’re going to miss this.”
