Gene Simmons Biography
Gene Simmons’ biography is as fascinating and interesting as the man himself – ‘The Demon’ of the famous rock band of the 1970s – Kiss! Gene Simmons, or Chaim Witz, was born on August 25, 1949, in Haifa, Israel. The Israeli-born ‘American’ moved to New York City, at the age of eight, with his Hungarian-Jewish mother Florence Klein. His father, Feri Witz, who was also Jewish, had abandoned his family.
When he arrived in the US, he took the name of Eugene Klein, and later Gene Klein. In the late 1960s, he changed his name again, this time to Gene Simmons. He attended Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York. From an early age, Simmons had a strong desire for fame and fortune. In fact, his involvement in music began in the early years of his life.
As a teenager, Simmons started his first band called ‘Lynx’, which he left to form another – Long Island Sounds. One of his bands produced a show, ‘Leeta’, which was later released on the ‘Kiss’ box set in its version of the show. Although he performed in these bands, he made a lot of money by doing other odd jobs like making comedy films and buying old comic books.
It was in the early 1970s that Simmons formed a rock band with Paul Stanley. Although he recorded one album, it was never released. Both Simmons and Stanley were not completely satisfied with the sound and appearance of this group. When they planned some changes in an attempt to fire their members, they were so opposed to their ideas that they decided to go on their own, even though they had a record deal with Epic Records.
Simmons and Stanley were not easily swayed. They decided to form the ultimate rock band, and began looking for a drummer and guitarist for their band. This great search ended when they were joined by two of the best in their fields – Peter Criscuola and Paul Frehley. And then, finally the big moment came in February 1974, when ‘Kiss’ released their first, self-titled album!
Gene Simmons became the driving force behind the one-of-a-kind, Kiss franchise. It was Stanley who quickly took over the role of lead singer on stage. With their trademark look and feel, the band rose to fame over the years together. Simmons was loved for his ‘Demon’ antics, by young and old alike – spitting blood, breathing fire, and wagging his tongue in the hard rock band Kiss!
On a personal note, Simmons has had several long-term relationships, the most notable being Cher and Diana Ross. Although the man has never married, he currently lives in California with his ex-girlfriend Shannon Tweed. The couple has two children – a son, Nicholas, and a daughter, Sophie. A polyglot by nature, Simmons can speak four languages - English, Hungarian, Hebrew and German – and is even trying Japanese and Mandarin!
