Hiking Indiana – Pinnacle Peak Trail At Jackson State Forest – Indiana
The most popular destination in Jackson State Forest is the one-mile drive to Pinnacle Peak. At 966 meters above sea level, this is the second highest point in the park. You will need good walking shoes for this trail. Sandals, flip flops and dress shoes are not suitable at all because this method is very hard. It’s spacious, well-known, and has a great location, but there are a lot of ups and downs. It is a difficult process.
Trail One is the trailhead that accesses the site, heading from the Pinnacle Peak parking lot, on the northeast side of the park. Just follow Main Forest Road all the way back, keep left. The Pinnacle Peak Shelter House is a short walk away, a great place for a family reunion or gathering. There’s a playground, an old-fashioned campground, fishing at Knob Lake, and many other activities here, too, and it’s a great place to spend the day.
The trail begins with a steep climb to the Old Tower Site, the first site along the trail. An old fire tower was here at one time, some of the old concrete supports are still sticking out of the ground. At this point, you’ll want to take the left fork, right to High Point, about a mile away.
The left fork goes down a lot, be careful because this section is rocky and slippery even on dry ground. The path goes up, down and then up. When you meet Trail 10 coming from the left. Shortly after Trail 10 heads east, Trail One continues up and around the mountain.
You will come to a point where you will see two posts that look like a path going between them. You can climb Pinnacle Peak this way, but the trail goes to the left. If you go straight here, you will be climbing a vertical, rocky cliff. The left fork is long, but very easy.
The path from here climbs gently, curving behind the Peak, and finally emerges on the last path to the summit. There, there are two main vistas. The main vista looks at the path you just discovered. On the right a spectacular view of the surrounding area, on the left the many mountains of the park. Ahead is High Point. Another vista is a small, but impressive view of the neighboring mountains. A spectacular Chestnut Oak offers a low branch to sit and watch. There are also nice flat stones to sit on, and a bench to sit on. It’s a great place to bring a lunch to eat while you contemplate what you’re seeing.
The Pinnacle Peak Trail actually runs through a forest of Chestnut Oak, Sugar Maple and other hardwoods. Wildflowers are abundant in winter. The 300-odd foot climb passes through beautiful forest, ridges and splits as it climbs to its destination, Pinnacle Peak. This is one of the best hikes in the Jackson State Forests.
