Fishing for the Elusive Bass
What is the best way to drive a bull to get distracted – Answer – Tell him you just heard that a friend of yours has caught a Bass where he has been trying without luck for the last six months. This is a crime to see him end up in court on the charge of murder with intent to injure! Bass fishing is one topic that makes the hearts of lake anglers race.
Why do Bass fish seem to capture the imagination more than any other fish for most of us? They are abundant around the coast in many areas now that we have gotten to know them and fish them like we never did years ago.
On the east coast where I do most of my fishing (Aldeburgh/Pakefield area) you can catch schools all day in the right conditions along with the chance of a very heavy cast.
I know fishermen who float to them and catch everything, up to 25 in one trip when they feed! I also know guys who have worked hard and know with the right amount of time that Bass will work.
The reason is not because they are rare or very difficult to find, but Bass has a mysterious quality about it and many anglers put it on a pedestal, above many other species. It used to be rare because many fishermen didn’t go there Bass fishing and many Bass were caught more by accident than by design, but not anymore.
Is it because they fight like other fish – I don’t think so. Other species such as Mackerel, Mullet, Pollack fought one battle, right?
Is it because they differ in size, shape or weight, I don’t think so.
Maybe it’s because there are different ways we can use to catch them. You can catch fish on the bottom using lures or floats, use jigs, jelly worms, lures, plugs or poppers to catch Bass. There are many different ways.
One of my favorite methods is to use bait and poppers, probably the most difficult method of all, but for me that’s where the answer lies. A lot of practice and a lot of skill goes into it Bass fishing using bait and poppers! Also a lot of local knowledge is needed for fish behavior. I know in an area where during one of the longest tides you can stop your watch with a Bass running down the canal. Now I don’t recommend ‘Catch & Release’, which is very individual but it makes sense that if I were to continue to fish in that area I would soon start to wonder why the Bass aren’t. there too.
The one or two places I visit that can produce fish I will return them unless I want one for the table. I just feel that there is no reason to kill the golden goose.
If you have done your homework and studied the ‘knowledge’, then you will realize that there is a time and place where you can set your watch and what time and wavelength the amazing Bass will appear. They will pass through a river of stones for example at a certain time of the tide. This is where ‘homework’ comes in. Not only does it take patience, skill, practice and knowledge of where and when to catch them but also the feeling of putting in the hours and reaping the benefits and satisfaction beyond belief.
Why else would we do this? I know a chap who has been trying for a couple of years now to catch Bass and has never had a good sniff, other than admiring what his fellow anglers catch! He will do well, it’s just a matter of time and I hope I’ll be around to see the joy and look on his face when it happens.
Why don’t we just throw a bait at the end of the run, which we all know claims more than the Bass section instead of standing maybe section after section and throwing baits without even getting a whiff of Bass. ?
Working plugs and poppers is just fun. There’s something about watching a popper doing its thing on a calm sea, bobbing up and down or watching a plug come under a perfectly clear sea, looking as you believe, a bait fish should look like!
I still get tinnitus every time I go Bass fishing I’m stuck in one and almost everyone I talk to feels the same way. Heart rate isn’t always good as we get older, trust me! I know you have used the knowledge and skills you have learned over the years that have paid off. In fact, catch a nice looking Bass on a light trail and the fun is quadrupled!
Much has been said and written that plugs, baits or poppers are the best but to be honest my friends and I have caught a lot of fish on a variety of different types.
The old adage about more fish caught more fishermen than they did fish!
