Classic Songs About Shipwrecks
While much has been written, documented, and exploited about the sinking of the Titanic over the past century, other shipwrecks have received little attention. A few became well-known through film, although all but one of the paintings has been lost.
Another famous sea disaster is known not because of the movie, but because of the music. The Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank on November 10 exactly forty years ago, was the story of Canadian musician Gordon Lightfoot.
This song describes exactly what happened to a freighter the day it capsized in Lake Superior. It was carrying a heavy load of steel from Superior, Wisconsin when it was caught in a storm. All twenty-one men on board died when it capsized, just two hours after it went down.
Like the Edmund Fitzgerald, the story of some ships has been told in music. Titanic has been used extensively, most recently by legendary songwriter Bob Dylan on his album. A stormy wind. There’s also a great bluegrass cover of Titanic, “Big Train” by an Ohio band called the Dry Branch Fire Squad.
Here are five other songs about shipwrecks, none of which have come close to charting Gordon Lightfoot’s “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
“The Thresher” by Phil Ochs
This US Navy ship, which was destroyed 220 kilometers east of Boston on April 10, 1963, resulted in the loss of all 129 people on board. The singer wrote about the world’s worst shipwreck in a song on his album All Stories Worth Singing.
“Ruben James” by the Kingston Trio
In 1941 a German U-Boat bombed this Navy destroyer, killing 100 people even before the United States entered World War II. The trio managed to turn the event into a popular song with a catchy chorus.
“The Scorpion Goes Away But Never Comes Back” by Phil Ochs
Known as the Yew, the ship named the spider was transferred to the French Navy in 1944. Although it was not sunk until two years after his death, Ochs’ ballad Rehearsal for Retirement The album said that the ship was leaving the United States never to return.
“Andrea Gail” by the Cobblestones and “Fishermen’s Song” by Jari Makala
Both songs are about the ship that became popular with Perfect A storm, an Academy Award-winning film starring George Clooney. The first is rock music, while the other mixes influence Irish and Scottish music.
“Lord Grenville” by Al Stewart
The ship in this opening song from Year of the Cat it was named Revenge, where the Vice Admiral’s title was the main one. In 1591, he sailed the ship to the Spanish treasure, but was separated from the rest of the fleet. An all-night battle with fifteen Spanish ships weakened his men until his crew surrendered. Although Grenville was seriously wounded, the 49-year-old explorer was captured and died on board the enemy ship.
