Reiki For Pets – Visions of Nestor

In Greek mythology, Nestor was a statesman who liked to tell ancient stories to the young. In Incline Village (Lake Tahoe), Nestor is a gray-haired rabbit who volunteers to serve. When I first met him, Nestor had already received the first and second degrees of Reiki. Odd (and interesting), I thought, for a rabbit to know Reiki! As a Reiki Master, I understood how someone could help him, but I wondered: what would he do with it? As it turns out, some amazing things!

I started listening to Nestor as part of my work for his human friend. To my great delight, I found a wise, willing, well-informed person about the changes in his family and the whole world. He likes to travel with his homo sapiens and asks how he can help their growth. According to my shamanism website, geocities.com/~animalspirits/:

Rabbit/Rabbit wisdom includes:

– Fraud

– Paradoxes and contradictions

– Having your own wisdom

-Receiving hidden teachings and messages naturally

– Quick thinking

– Humility

-Walking with fear

-Sudden reinforcement

Nestor embodies such gifts, and his gentle but strong spirit bestows them on his people and ours. I kept in touch with Nestor from time to time, but I always sent messages to his friend.

Since she received her Reiki certification from someone else, I never thought to check when or if she would be “ready” to be trained by a Master Teacher. One day, my friend Nestor (my Level 2 student) asked me if I could convince them all to go to the Master Teacher. The results and “buts” surrounded me. I no longer invite all of my Reiki 2 students to become Master Teachers. How would he feel if he knew that I had confirmed the rabbit? What would other teachers think? While researching these ideas, I noticed that Nestor was critical of “naturalism.” I felt like a Geico commercial: “Reiki. Easy even a rabbit can do!” It’s true, I thought, at least Reiki 1 and maybe even Level 2. As a “universal life force,” Reiki can travel far beyond people. At one time, only Japanese men knew Reiki and Dr. Hayashi refused to teach a stranger named Mrs. Takata, the West would have missed out on a miraculous cure.

I don’t limit the flow of students between the first and second session, but I have great respect for the title of Reiki Master Teacher. Not that RMT training means that one has “mastered” all life forces. No! Also Master Teacher training does not require students to be “enlightened” or perfect in order to continue. I like to teach Reiki precisely because it does not require these things. However, the teacher’s title means understanding and discernment. In order to convince everyone to that level, I have to believe that they will commit to a life of steady Reiki as explained by the founder Mikao Usui: “For today, don’t be angry. Don’t worry, and be filled with gratitude. Do your work honestly. Be kind to people.” Simple principles, but powerful changes. I did not bother to change the rabbit to Level 3, but in order to confirm Nestor as a Reiki Master, I felt that he needed more training and information about these energies. Somehow I had to transfer this information into Nestor’s psyche. But was such a publication possible?

Meeting animals made me realize. After I suffered a brain injury in 1998, I spent six weeks at my parents’ house. When he was working, I wished someone else would be with me so I wouldn’t have to face my broken life alone. One day, the heart and mind cried, and a great horned owl appeared. In the middle of summer, in the middle of the day, this owl stayed with me every day for six weeks, landing every time I sat outside. In the year 2000, I saw a puppy walking out of control into four lanes of high-speed traffic, with its angry human screaming in its wake. From across the street, I closed the dog’s third eye and sent a simple message: “Stop.” The dog wagged its tail and sat down as its breathing companion grabbed and retied the leash. The cars were gone and the man shouted in confusion, gratitude and relief, “Uh, thanks?” “No problem,” I said. I also remembered the many times I have “called” animals to take pictures of my husband. They appear, they look strange, and they allow pictures to document the exchange.

Well, I agreed, I can communicate with animals.

I presented myself as an external hard drive, and put files to Nestor’s brain, but he surprised me at first with difficult questions about Reiki 2. He understood and used the symbol of distance healing / mantra, which allowed him to think about someone and “send” them. power, but how can they use other symbols effectively? In telepathic terms I taught him the subtle use of other symbols, such as clearing auras or restoring crystals. Reiki 3 teaches something called “The Violet Breath,” and I connected Nestor’s nose, so he could “breathe violet” throughout the day. I had planned to be at 11:00 one morning, but I decided to start too early. Nestor’s friend later asked me if I started our session at 10:36 am because Nestor took over like an hour later. This was the exact time of our instruction.

Nestor has proven to be a passionate and dedicated student, who “explores” mentally, as my students do via email. Most amazingly, however, he has become a teacher. Nestor’s homo sapiens tell me that wild rabbits now go to Nestor, not afraid of the actions of the people nearby. Like my senior students, however, they challenge me, encouraging me to take the principles of Reiki more seriously. I often explain “Do your duty honestly” as a Buddhist concept of Dharma, telling students, “Don’t hide your gifts! Be honest and creative in ways you can serve.”

Touche, Nestor. Thanks for the reminder.

* I wrote the above article in early 2007, and our beloved Nestor has already passed on: but not before inspiring many animals and people to become Reiki Master Teachers! Nestor’s “mother” shared stories about her rabbit’s healing gifts, and these stories led many Reiki Masters to connect their pets on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd level. I have also shared his stories and challenges with pet owners to open their minds to connecting with their furry, scaly and/or feathered friends.

Once, Nestor helped me in some cases with a man with a brain injury, and I told this to his wife. That same week, a separate report told him that “an unknown rabbit and a woman with long hair suddenly appeared in your men’s group. I don’t usually work with rabbits. I don’t know how it got there.” The woman laughed, delighted to find such “confirmation” in a field that seemed devoid of real evidence. Although I gave under-the-radar animal communication sessions before Nestor, this little rabbit inspired me to honor and give those gifts even more. I have taught animal communication classes, guided sessions, and trained animals in energy healing, including Reiki. Thanks to Nestor’s persistence, many animals have avoided euthanasia because their owners are able to explore their true needs and expectations.

In many cases, these animals show that they want to heal more. Their behavior changes, and people notice that other people treat their pets differently. After a Reiki experience, people tend to attract healing dogs, cats, or other species. Animals that normally avoid each other begin to hug or stare deeply at each other. Those who knew and loved Nestor may miss him on the earthly plane, but he has left his mark!
