Suicidal Tendencies Interview
TIS = The Indie Spiritualist
DP = Dean Pleasants
EM = Eric Moore
TIS: This is the hardest tour you’ve put together here. You have Cro-Mags, DRI, Underdog…all of whom, along with you, are solid legends! How has traveling been for you so far?
DP: It’s been great, man. Kind of dull, as trips go, but very interesting. We call the bus we’re on a “submarine”, we go underwater and we get out of gigs. Every day is a different group of people but it’s always fun. We’re playing stuff from No Mercy’s history and Suicidal Army and some old stuff, so the crowds are enjoying it, and so are we. We’re getting into our niche right now, which often happens, and then the journey is over. We’re all in this together and it’s just been a lot of fun.
TIS: Is it me, or do you guys tend to avoid touring with new “punk/hardcore” bands?
DP: Not really, we just do what works for us. We did a show recently with Deftones.
EM: Yeah and we talked to the Lamb of God a while ago. We tour with a lot of new bands, and then we break them up, haha.
DP: We did festivals in Europe and it was very different. We did a show with Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Kiss. It was crazy.
EM: Yeah, trust me, it’s different. Suicide is very different.
TIS: Have you guys ever skated by yourself?
DP: Yes, absolutely.
EM: Dean still skates. His team is right there. I also used to skate when I was skinny. As always. I fell and broke my lips and shit, but I always got up.
TIS: Huh, good. So where did you grow up?
DP: Well when I was a kid, my first board was polyurethane, that plastic thing when they first came out. That was before the skating rinks and things. I play on the Pep board now with monster wheels and Indy cars. I can show you.
TIS: Yeah that would be great if you don’t mind.
DP: No, no!
EM: I always have Wal-Mart boards. I had a Wal-Mart life club. I tell my mom I want one that shoots both ways and she’s like, “No! You’re going to get a $10 board, and you’re going to love it”, and I’m like, well, I’ll just ride BMX bikes. Because when you’re a criminal growing up, you steal everything you love.
DP: So here’s my board. I have work on this trip and of course I am sailing. The guys at Rip City (Santa Monica, CA) pulled this off for me. I told them I played with Jim’s brother and they hooked it up.
EM: Yeah, the only reason they do Pep board games is because Pep is our son.
DP: No. I really like sailing, so for this thing, it’s like two strikes and you can go forever, and I’m running. Before this board, I played on Dogtown and had Jesse from Santa Monica Airlines.
TIS: Yes. So Sucidal, especially Mike Muir was known to have beef with Rage Against The Machine. In fact, he wrote a song called Do What I Tell You, which is the lyrics to Rage’s song Killing In The Name. Is this still an ongoing thing?
DP: To be honest, I don’t know much about it. We just came from South America where we played with Rage.
EM: Yeah, we played with them. It was just three bands, us, The Mars Volta & Rage.
DP: Yeah and it was really good, so I don’t want to say anything bad about them.
EM: But we have nothing negative to say.
DP: They put on a hell of a show. It was crazy. There were 50,000 people attending the school. I mean, we all put on a good show, but Rage WAS THE BEST SHOW.
EM: Yeah, Rage was killing it.
TIS: Okay. So is it safe to say you don’t play this song anymore, or you never played it?
DP: We didn’t play there.
EM: It was really a beef between people, not groups. It wasn’t like we kicked their asses, or they came to us.
DP: It was a war of words, which Mike was involved in. What happened was that the groups were traveling together, and one was on the phone, and one pushed the other, and it was really Tom Foolery. He then said some of Mike’s interview with the group was either old fashioned or funny. Mike asked us if we would let him write a song about them. He didn’t really want to involve us. I wasn’t mad at those guys. So he wrote Do What You Tell Me, I was like, well, he’s mad at them.
So we were going to South America, where we were given two parties, one in Chile and the other in San Paulo. Chief Rage was like, well I don’t know if they want you to come, but he asked them and it was already forgotten. And the Brazilians said they wanted Suicidal to come, so we went. We got there and saw Tom, and Zack, and said hello and everything was fine.
TIS: Yes. What are the lyrics for the new album? Is there a new release date?
DP: Well, we wanted to release the No Mercy/Suicidal Army record to tour because Mike had the vision to edit the record and show people the dark side of Suicidal. We usually play three or four songs in our set. As for the new record, it depends on the current period due to the state of the industry and distribution. We really want to go out right now and re-baptize the people that were in us before, and show the new generation of children that we are before we make history. We don’t want to release something that won’t be heard. This is very important to all of us. When you put your heart and soul into something, you want it to be heard. And we are coming from the US tour to Europe and South America etc.
TIS: Yeah my friend Randy was saying in a way how much he loved the new No Mercy music and what you guys did with it.
EM: Yeah man, it’s new, hard and fast stuff.
DP: I’m throwing back the way he wrote a long time ago. I used to be in Infectious Grooves, before we killed ourselves, and we used to do things a certain way, filling and writing, but there was a suicidal way that made it sound the way it was. And we went back to that formula. Mike was doing the hard rhythms and I was doing my own, and the drummer and bass were doing theirs. It really creates a different kind of photography. And that’s what we did with No Mercy. When you listen, you can hear everyone doing what they do best.
TIS: You mentioned Infectious Grooves. You guys are playing your first US show in 10 years on Nov 23rd. Can you talk a little bit about that?
EM: Yeah man, it’s going to be a great show. We are playing at The House of Blues in Hollywood.
DP: Infectious ended up playing in Chile with RATM and The Mars Volta, and we’ve never played before. We have made several trips to France, Europe and Australia. Infectious’ first tour was opening for Ozzy.
TIS: Yeah, I remember. Can he come out and sing Therapy with you guys?
DP: Yes, and actually, when he shot the video with us, he broke his leg. We were in Chicago and I will never forget it. Everyone can say what they want about Ozzy, but he’s a great guy, he really is.
TIS: So is there any truth to the Suicidal/LA Sureno Venice 13 gang rumors? You can say yes once, and twice if you want.
EM: Hahaha, man.
DP: Haha, there are many criminals who say they are killing themselves, but I am not a member of a criminal gang.
EM: I wear red so…(laughs).
DP: We have a lot of people in this group who are into other things that might not be fun. When we play in Ventura, we always have the Hells Angels at our shows. We have many groups of 1% bikers who are in Suicide. They don’t cause trouble on the show, but they are there. When we play Ventura, the whole street is covered with Hells Angels.
TIS: It sounds crazy.
EM: It’s amazing.
DP: Yeah, it’s crazy. So many people like our music and for us it is an honor. There are a lot of people in prison who love our music and they say it helps them through the day so it’s great. For us, it is very important to touch people. If you can help someone get through their day when they are struggling, it means something. So talking about criminals, I don’t know. It’s crazy and people are really doing what they want.
TIS: ok guys. Thank you for your time.
