Hard Core Training Has New Meaning to Me

When I was 13 years old, a family friend gave me a box of exercise magazines. I never thought that the man who inspired me, Arnold Schwarzenegger, would one day be the governor of California.

I participated in my first bodybuilding competition in 1984, at the age of 16. Since then, I have participated in about 40 competitions and won titles such as Mr. Philadelphia, Mr. Pennsylvania, Mr. Physique USA, and in 1993, Mr. . North America.

I was at the top of my game, preparing to go pro, when my body started giving me problems. In 1994-95, I had a problem with my courage and strength. I was talking to a friend the other day and I told him that I looked on the Internet and thought I might have this disease, Multiple Sclerosis.

He just laughed and said, “Paul, you don’t have MS, you just dropped 550 pounds!” So I laughed it off too; there is no way i had MS. In the back of my mind, however, I realized that I was swinging on Smith’s machine; that didn’t require me to organize myself.

When my health was failing, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1997. I was still going to compete, a year later, but I lost my sight. This made me very depressed, and because of the MS, this made me very depressed. Because I was in so much pain, I asked my doctor to put me on anti-depressants, sleeping pills, and anti-convulsants. The medication only made me so tired and depressed, and my MS progressed to the point where I needed to be in a wheelchair.

I sat in my wheelchair for a long time, feeling sorry for myself. Then I met my future wife, Judy, and she told me I should get my MS. I told him I didn’t want to and I hated it, but he told me I needed to do something besides being upset. I didn’t know if I could, because the doctors told me I had early stage MS. That is the worst kind; you’re not feeling well.

I decided not to believe the doctors, and went back to the gym to start exercising. I found out which muscles are most affected by MS – core muscles (abs, hips, and back). When this is weak, it is like a fragile flower that falls when the wind blows. That was me, and that’s why people with MS are always looking for something to help them get better. I also learned about core muscles from watching my son, Tyler. When he was only 7 months old he had the leg strength to push himself to stand up, but I had to hold him so he could balance. By the time he was 11 months old, he was always using the sofa to prop himself up – just like I had to do. Then, I realized that in a baby, the gastrointestinal tract is the last to go, and in a person with MS, or other neurological disease, it is the first to go. Before walking, Tyler can kneel. I thought, “What a great way to exercise; do it from your knees and challenge the limits. You don’t have to worry about falling!” I also found that by waking up new muscles, I was able to stabilize and move better.

The average person activates about 60-70% of their muscles throughout their life, bodybuilders about 75% (and bigger), but a dancer or gymnast activates about 90% or more. I said to myself, “Ha! So the way I did this is by using a Swiss ball, or standing on cushions. Both strengthen the core.

In 2001, I moved to California. When I returned to the gym, I realized that it was inaccessible to a wheelchair user. Sure, maybe bathrooms and parking are available, but they’re usually equipment. I applied for a job at Club-One, even though they didn’t have wheelchair access. When I told the boss about my work helping people with disabilities, he really listened. That’s why I decided that I want to work there.

During my interview, the fitness director asked me if I knew what advanced training was. I wasn’t sure at the time so I tried to joke, “Sure, tough training. I’ve been doing it for 20 years.” He didn’t laugh, but I still got the job.

I started training people with disabilities, but I realized that many people with disabilities were not coming to the gym because the equipment was not available. I decided to do something about it, and in 2002, my wife and I opened Accessible Fitness, a wheelchair-accessible gym in Santa Clara, California. We specialize in working with people of all ages and fitness levels, and not just any fitness center is wheelchair accessible, but cardio and cardio equipment as well.

Now I help people young and old to get fit, lose weight, get six pack abs and others want more strength and muscle so they can move easily in their wheelchair.

“My life is different now because I feel it because of exercise, I’m back in control of my life and I don’t have to submit to this thing called MS anymore. I’m inspired by the people I work out with every day and I’m also competing with anyone who has some kind of physical problem. .”

I am no longer in a wheelchair and this year I will compete in the Mr. America. Even if I have to use my cane, I will be there, win or lose, to represent people who have problems like me.

For a long time I asked myself, “Why?” But then I realized that this is my calling, my passion in life.
