Book Review: The Cotton Tree by Sahr Sankoh

In The price of cotton, Sahr Sankoh uses brutal honesty, sarcasm and sarcasm to shed light on today’s political issues. This book contains 57 poems full of magic and fairy tales about things that maybe we want to say at some point, but we can’t. Sankoh’s masterful use of voice brings to life global events, poking fun at a wide range of topics, from public transport to Japanese horror movies, rap music and even touching on controversial topics such as the missing Malaysian plane. Sankoh offers a thoughtful, yet humorous take on today’s issues and society, using irony and wit without being offensive or thoughtless.

The price of cotton it’s different from most poetry books because poetry isn’t the eight-line poem we were taught to sing in elementary school. Rather, it is a unique collection of poems of varying length that explore topics that are often controversial in contemporary culture. I really like how brutally honest Sankoh is in the Forward section of the book, letting us know that we don’t have to bother dissecting every line of every poem to find a deeper and “hidden” meaning. His poetry is more of a “what you see is what you get.” the environment. However, there is a brief summary of each poem at the end of the book, which in my opinion, only provides further insight into the effectiveness of Sankoh’s analytical thinking.

One poem that really interests me is the title “Starbucks Demeanor” in which Sankoh makes fun of the famous coffee shop, and the type of customers who like the famous coffee, including the type of coffee that one would like. Another favorite is “The Cassette Tape Culture” which begins as a journey through the heart of the simplicity of youth and how music was a part of that culture then suddenly takes a sudden turn (but I won’t spoil it). If I had to pick a poem that I liked the least, I would say “God Save the Wolf.” I personally found this to be very vulgar and classy, in my opinion, but I would not recommend The Cotton Tree to anyone under the age of sixteen because it touches on the heads of adults at times.

all, The price of cotton it’s a fun and funny journey into the world we live in today. One should take these poems with a grain of salt and know that they are intended to shed light and humor on dark and difficult topics. This book is not for the sensitive or the moral. It’s a great take on today’s hot topics and I enjoyed it. Sahr Sankoh has a way of making controversial topics seem serious. I recommend this book if you have an open mind and a good sense of humor.
