"Childhood" Expressed in the Ode ‘Intimation of Immortality’

William Wordsworth is a great lover of nature in all its forms. It has remained his main focus and has made him able to express his feelings. He has written several poems in his childhood, but this poem is known as one of the best poems. It was completed in 1804 and published in poetry, in Two Books in 1807. It consists of eleven parts which are further divided into three parts. His first stage is associated with childhood and the second stage is his old age or manhood, where he spends more time following conventional ideas. Its third part shows a positive response to the problem of environmental losses.

In this poem, William Wordsworth describes his childhood. He describes it as two childhood visions. According to him, one is childhood and the other is childhood that we carry inside us as memories. These two visions are also described by Alec King as visible childhood and invisible childhood. Its first four parts describe childhood and its connection with nature. In this age, the child can see the divine glory of the universe. He calls the child a great philosopher because of his pre-existing memory. According to Alec King, life enters a person’s life at birth as an event of his immortal life. It is temporarily driven from its divine home, but in its early years, it does not forget its home or the divine light that is its source or its company. That’s why he sticks to nature. All things such as marshes, rivers, earth, rainbows, flowers, sky, stars and sunlight, all seem beautiful and beautiful to him. He remains with them and enjoys the glory of God. The poet admits that everything was natural when he was a child, but now it seems different. Alec King calls it a visual childhood connected to nature. At the same time, the poet calls the first vision of childhood.

Another is invisible childhood. William Wordsworth calls it another childhood vision. Here the child becomes the father of a person. The main reason is that the child remains innocent and enjoys heavenly or divine visions. His journey to human nature extinguishes the first vision. He is a big man, and his thoughts are very much with worldly things. In him, childhood appears to be deaf and dumb. When he sees that the environment seems to be not good, he gets depressed. He hears the song of the birds in the spring; he watches the lambs skip and jump and blow in the wind, but he does not find the joy of his childhood. He finds that the whole world is very happy and, around him, there is a joyful celebration. His heart also wants to participate to play and laugh among the flowers, but everything seems different to him because he has lost his visible childhood.

In his mind, human life is just sleep and forgetfulness. Before he entered the world, his life was pure and very glorious because heaven or divine vision is still in infancy. In her childhood, her memories and the magic of that place were alive, but when her childhood was transferred to a man, all the magic died. He calls it a conspiracy of worldly pleasures that help us forget about glory. It is the appeal of such a plot that confuses the poet. William Wordsworth looks at a six-year-old boy and imagines his life rushing towards adulthood. He believes that the life of a great person consists of worldly pleasures, celebrations, weddings, sorrows and funerals. He speaks to the child like a powerful prophet and informs him of the lost truth. She also chases him away from rushing into a traditional adult life and ordinary hardships.

Now, the poet turns to the point of philosophy. He admits that he has a very different skill set. In his art, a visible childhood comes alive as his memories are enriched by the joy of nature. It is always with him and provides a way to a lost world of nature, innocence and exploration. Such a vision makes him happy with nature, and as a result, he encourages the birds to sing, and then all creatures take part in the joy of May morning. He admits that the materialistic world has lost some of the glory of nature and knowledge, but it has provided a mature understanding or wisdom. Such insight or wisdom makes a child the father of a person.

It means that these two visions helped him to love nature and natural beauty. Now he is able to get special ideas from natural things that will remain alive or with him until death. It is his memory or knowledge that connects him to childhood and nature. Indeed, he is right because his life and all his works are a clear example of that.
