The Katrina Disaster: Remember Doctor Alton Ochsner

Do you remember Dr. Alton Ochsner?

Back when smoking cigarettes was announced as a man, and even good for your health, Dr. Ochsner was showing us black lungs from a smoker and nice pink lungs from a non-smoker. HE said that black lung disease can cause cancer. When some people saw this, they stopped smoking.

I was reminded of this when I watched a television advertisement from a major tobacco company. These ads provide information to help people quit smoking. The most important thing for the company, who can’t advertise their smoking products, is give them brand name recognition which is very important for big companies.

The FCC, which has not learned how to regulate smut on television, allows the company to run these commercials underground. The tobacco company has the FCC in a dim-wiggle. I learned this from Fred Slodcroft. Fred is an office manager in the FCC’s Gettysburg office.

I said, “Fred, how are things going at the FCC?”

He leaned on his broom expertly and said, “Those tobacco ads have made us wary.”

“Why Fred? The ads tell people not to smoke. It’s good, right?”

“Yes,” said Fred Slodcroft, “but it also gives the company name recognition.”

I don’t think any of us have a problem with Katrina’s damage.

I spoke with Sandra Murphy at the Ochsner Foundation in New Orleans. “For nearly 60 years, Ochsner has served the people of New Orleans.

“Ochsner’s main campus, which includes a hospital and clinic, is located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, but the Ochsner Clinic Foundation (OCF) has 24 clinics located throughout the region, including the North Shore and Baton Rouge.”

Sandra told me that three hospitals were lost in Katrina and there was extensive damage to the hospital and other hospitals. Read about the Foundation at http://www.ochsner.org/. You will find interesting stories about the Clinic’s response to the hurricane and the aftermath.

The Foundation currently has significant financial needs to provide essential medical services in the community. They are also getting money to rebuild their workers’ houses.

I waited a long time to get through to the receptionist at the Foundation because of the volume of their medical work.

I am old, but I knew that tobacco causes cancer because my parents taught me a long time ago. Before Ochsner showed us the black and pink lungs. But Dr. Ochsner really brought the danger to everyone.

He was born in 1942 in Kimble, South Dakota. He graduated from the University of South Dakota and the Washington School of Medicine in St. At the age of 31, he became the Chair of Surgery at Tulane University.

Sandra said he died in 1984.
