Book Revue of Nine Dragon by Michael Connelly
Harry Bosch is working with an anti-criminal group in LA. He makes a call to investigate a murder in South Los Angeles and it leads him to Fortune Liquors. Bosch recalled a Chinese owner who had been shot a few years earlier. The owner had given him a match book at the time, which said; “Blessed is the man who takes refuge in himself”. Bosch had been carrying a book of matches ever since. The words helped Bosch and he saw it as Mr. Li’s kindness.
Liquor security camera footage, along with an interview with Li’s son, help Bosch and his friend, Iggy Ferras, say the shooter may have come for security or a bribe. This Chinese man was identified as Jing Chang. He was a member of the trinity. A triad is a mafia or criminal organization with roots in Hong Kong. The three Chinese teams were the LAPD’s special unit for identifying Asian criminals so Bosch worked with a detective named David Chu. At first there was mistrust but later they worked well together.
Then Harry learns that his daughter who lives in Hong Kong has suddenly disappeared from their home. Maddie lives with her mother. He immediately thinks that there may be a connection between the Liquor Store case and his son. He stopped what he was doing and flew to the royal city to find his daughter.
Detective Harry Bosch takes the Chinese Triads to where they come from. Now it was his story. His ex-wife is tired. Harry was briefly married to former FBI agent Eleanor Wish. She gave birth to a child but Bosch did not know about her until after the divorce. Eleanor first lived in Vegas and then moved to China to work in a casino in Macau. Harry had just met his daughter. He loved her now. They had talked on the phone and texted each other frequently. He didn’t want anything to happen to him now.
Harry jumped into the dangerous parts of the city. Kowloon is where most of the three were. He had to keep the events surrounding the Feast of Hungry Ghosts. People there were offering incense to their ancestors. Hong Kong was strange to him even though he had been there before in peaceful times.
One thing he did with Mattie was, innocently, send her pictures of his lung cancer as a warning to his parents about the dangers of smoking. Also, he asked her to translate the mark found on Li’s ankles from her open bag. He sent a picture to his Mandarin-speaking daughter in the hope that she could translate. Maddie was an intelligent young woman.
Unbeknownst to the Hong Kong authorities, Harry picks the locks and shoots the bad guys. His ex-wife is shot in a fire. Finally, her daughter has been found. He was captured by three Chinese groups. When they found him, he was taped up and in a car. Harry and Maddie go to the airport. He is now with Bosch in Los Angeles.
After returning to LA, Bosch discovers that nothing is going well with the Fortune Liquors case since Iggy is off work for the weekend. Harry angrily tells Iggy that he will find a new friend. The local police failed to arrest the accused and he was released on bail. He fled the country. Then, the Hong Kong police arrive and demand Bosch’s release. Bosch brings his lawyer, his brother Mickey Haller to a meeting with the Chinese. Haller is threatening to turn the story into a front-page media story about the dangers faced by US citizens in Hong Kong. The police are leaving without charge. He also agrees to release Sun Yee who helped Harry.
Then, the unique way of lifting the finger from the recovered shell, can belong to the cartoonist Henry Lau and not the trinity. Bosch and Chu visit him. He knows that Lau did not know that the gun was borrowed from his nightclub. Bosch recognizes a college diploma produced by Lau, from the same college and year of graduation as the one in Robert Li’s office. Lau says she and Robert were roommates with Li’s assistant Eugene Lam. All three got together to play cards all the time
Bosch and Chu then arrest Lam, who they believe is the killer. Lam admits that his father’s murder was a conspiracy. His sister Mia organized everything. Then Robert came up with the idea of making three murders. Iggy goes to arrest Robert Li and is shot by Mia. Then he kills himself.
Maddie later tells her father that the robbery was originally a fake. She tries to get her mother to let her stay with Harry in LA. His friend’s brother turned into a real kidnapping to get money for the three. The three ended up shooting him. Maddie blames herself for her mother’s death. Harry then promised to help him make up for his past mistakes and feel better.
This book is fast paced and fun and will keep you listening. However, it makes you wonder why a son and daughter would have a parent because they refused to close a non-profit store in the old neighborhood.
