Book Review – Born to Kill – The Rise and Fall of America’s Bloodiest Asian Gang – By T.J. English
It was a hot summer day in 1990 and more than 100 Asian gangsters and their families gathered at Rosedale Memorial Park Cemetery in Linden, NJ to bury 21-year-old Vinh Vu, the number 2 leader of the violent Born to Kill Gang (BTK ).
Suddenly, three men arrived wearing long coats to cover the weapons they were carrying. Then these men did the unexpected: they shot the mourners and the plague ended. Panicked people ran in all directions, including gang leader David Thai and 19-year-old Vietnamese refugee Tinh Ngo, known as Timmy and his gang. More than 100 people were kicked out of the crowd. Five mourners were injured, but surprisingly no one was killed.
Tinh, like many of the young terrorists, had no family in America and joined the Vietnamese BTK group for the same reasons other criminals did: they wanted to have a family in a foreign country – people who could. trust and communicate with him in his language. Little did Tinh realize that he would be drawn into a snake’s nest, where the 34-year-old Thai man ordered his youth to carry out violent acts (vandalism, robbery and murder) against Asian migrants – people who traditionally did not report violence to the police.
Tinh did his first dirty work when he was involved in the arrest of a Chinese brothel in Chinatown. Although Tinh was not happy about the caper, it still gave him a sense of joy, knowing that he was now “one of the gang.” As he commits robbery after robbery, Tinh slowly begins to question whether this life of violence was meant for him.
David Thai sent his henchmen all over America to do their dirty work. In late 1990, Thai led the BTK team, including Tinh, to Doraville, Ga. to rob Odum Lin’s Chinese shop. Lin, unimpressed by the unshaven thugs, refused and was shot in the side of the head.
Miraculously, Lin survived but Tinh did not know the owner was still alive; he thought he was an accomplice to the murder. This reckless shooting sent Tinh over the top, and after he was arrested on a lesser charge soon after, he was confronted by a group of investigators, the Federal and New York City police, who were trying to build a case against Born. in Kill Gang, and its director David Thai in particular.
Tired of the gang life, Tinh turned around easily, and under the guidance of New York City Detective Bill Oldham, ATF Special Agent Dan Kumor, and Assistant US Attorney Alan Vinegrad, he began wearing a wire during his meetings with Thai and other high-ranking BTK members. . members.
In Born to Kill, TJ English, a former taxi driver in New York City and the author of another excellent book – The Westies, gives us the Tinh’s secret story that destroyed the Born to Kill Group. Tinh’s inner details were very accurate; Kumor and Oldham were even able to thwart a few BTK robberies before it happened.
At first, Tinh was afraid to wear a wire. Once, while Tinh was sitting in the living room of a safe house watching television with several other BTKs, a gang member saw a red light inside Tinh’s shirt. The light was the battery light on his recorder that was taped to his chest.
Thinking that he was now dead, Tinh ran to the bathroom, removed the tape recorder, then slipped back to the living room to await his fate. Surprisingly, the other gang member was just watching the television and did not notice that Tinh had left the room and returned. Tinh muttered something about a bad beeper to the gang member who saw the red light; a gang member bought Tinh’s description, and Tinh was safe – for now.
When Thai tried to involve his gang in a crime spree with the Italian gangs of New Jersey, which was also thwarted by Tinh’s inner knowledge of the impending event, Oldham, Kumor and Vinegrad decided that it was too dangerous for Tinh to stay underground. They took Tinh out on the streets and began to accuse Thai and other high-ranking BTKs. This resulted in Thai being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
