The Waterboys Biography and Top 10 Songs
One of my old workmates (Graig M) took me to The Waterboys because we used to travel around the UK fixing PCs and we were driving and The Waterboys was one of the CDs he used to play and then because I liked it he used to listen to it often. A month after I got paid I went to HMV and bought four CDs of The Waterboys (I usually spend most of my paycheck on CDs and music) and listened to it a lot. Craig is also responsible for some of my favorite songs.
The Waterboys were formed by Mike Scott in 1983 and Mike is the only member who has remained since then. There have been many members over the years, including: Anthony Thistlethwaite, Roddy Lorimer, Martyn Swain, Kevin Wilkinson, Eddi Reader, Karl Wallinger and Chris Whitten. Their music is a mix of Celtic, Folk and Rock N’ Roll. Some people have called The Waterboys song “The Big Music” which is named after a song from the album A Pagan Place. The same term has been used to describe other groups such as World Party, The Alarm, Simple Minds, The Hothouse Flyers and Big Country, and many of their songs are spiritual. The name The Waterboys is taken from Lou Reed’s song The Kids.
The Waterboys’ self-titled album was released in 1983 and contains one of their most popular songs, A Girl Called Johnny. The song is a tribute to Patti Smith who greatly inspired Mike Scott along with Bob Dylan and David Bowie. The original album consisted of only eight songs but the album was re-released in 2002 with an additional seven songs.
When A Pagan Place was released in 1984 it is known that the recording had started even before The Waterboys album was released. The performances were held in two separate sessions, one in 1982 and the second in 1983 with new members joining the second session. This album was also re-released in 2002 with additional tracks from the first recording session. Following the release The Waterboys toured the UK, also supporting U2 and The Pretenders at Glastonbury Festival.
1985 saw the release of This Is The Sea and it did better than the previous two albums and boasted the single The Whole Of The Moon which reached #26 in the UK. The song could have been promoted, but Mike Scott refused to sing it on Top Of The Pops because he insisted it had to be lip-synced.
The second phase of The Waterboys’ style began shortly before the release of Fisherman’s Blues in 1988 and saw them move from The Big Music to the Raggle Taggle Band style which led to Mike Scott’s move to Ireland and folk music there. The album is their most successful album to date with hits such as Strange Boat, And A Bang On The Ear and Fisherman’s Blues.
Room To Roam was released in 1990 and followed the style of the previous album. The song appears to be named after a passage in George MacDonald’s book, Phantastes. Some of these musicals include A Man Is In Love, The Raggle Taggle Gypsy, Further Up – Further In and Something That Is Gone.
I really like The Waterboys albums, Dream Harder was released in 1993 and is a return to the Rock style of their old style. The song The Return of Pan is about the Greek God also the song The Return Of Jimi Hendrix is one of my favorite tracks in the album. Favorites from the album include Corn Circles, Glastonbury Song and Preparing to Fly.
Rock In The Weary Land was released in 2000 and was Mike Scott’s first solo album in seven years. The album also changed the style of Radiohead and Beck, and Mike Scott described his style as “Sonic Rock”, a further change occurred in 2003 when he released Universal Hall which was mostly a rock album and a return to some of their Celtic past. music.
In 2007 The Waterboys released a new album Book Of Lightning which contains new songs such as Love Will Shoot You Down, You In the Sky and The Man With the Wind At His Heels. The Waterboys performed at the Return to Peace And Love Festival in Sweden on March 11, 2008.
