What Ever Happened to George and Alice Goeble?
The British know when something is funny. This is why they edited old television programs and rebroadcast them The George Goebel Show, The Bob Hope Show, The Sid Caesar Show and The Steve Allen Show.
According to http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/
notes /g/
georggobelshowt_1299001248.shtml [http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/guide/articles/g/georgegobelshowt_1299001248.shtml] broadcasts every week.
We find it on the website and I quote:
“George Gobel (born George Goebel in Chicago on May 20, 1920) was a child radio singer who became a huge hit on TV in the USA in the 1950s with his style of comedy. His approach was to look at life from a perspective. of a confused, trembling little boy, whose catchphrase ‘Well I’ll be a dirty bird’ was popular throughout the United States. Phyllis Avery).
The British copied the 1957-1959 versions.
George was Hollywood Squares.
The following are excerpts from http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/quotes/hollywoodsq.html. You’ll want to go there to read the unedited, unedited biographies of some of the show’s most famous stars.
Peter Marshall: What is “Do It”, “I Can Help” and “I Can’t Get Enough”?
George Gobel: I don’t know but he’s from next door.
Peter Marshall: If you find someone lying in the street, do you have to do anything?
George Goebel: I can crawl around him I think.
Peter Marshall: True or false…peas can live for 5,000 years.
George Gobel: Boy, it seems that way sometimes.
Peter Marshall: True or false, George… experts say there are only seven or eight things in the world better than ants.
George Gobel: Yes, and I think I voted six.
Peter Marshall: While visiting China, your tour guide starts yelling “Poo! Poo! Poo!” What does that mean?
George Goebel: Crossing the cow.
Peter Marshall: Back in the old days, when Great Grandpa put horseradish on his head, what was he trying to do?
George Gobel: Take it from his mouth.
At http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/about.aspx?id=12267 we can read Tom Smothers’ ‘Free Speech’ (Recorded on May 29, 2001, in New York.)
Ken Paulson: Welcome to “Speech Free,” a weekly discussion about freedom and America. I’m Ken Paulson. Today we’re joined by someone whose comedy produced by the Smothers Brothers made us laugh and make us think. We are delighted to welcome Tom Smothers. Nice to have you here.
Tom Smothers: Thank you.
Paulson: I started reading your biography, it shows that you were a big fan of George Goebel.
Smothers: I saw George Goebel when I was 15 on the “Ed Sullivan Show.” And I said, “God, that’s great!”
I remember the first thing I saw him do was lose his loose ball. And they told the police, they said it was stolen or lost. And he said, We have explained; He said, “Well, it’s round and it’s black with three holes in it.”
They said, “Well, are the holes up or down?”
…It just went on without any real humor. And I said, “I want to do it.”
Before I knew it I wanted to be an artist… and George Goebel played guitar. He had a very big guitar. He took the guitar from him. Not many people know that, but he was very good.
George Goebel was like Jack Benny. He was calm, great at comedy, and lovable.
I think I read somewhere that George Goebel exhibition it was one of those things that were not recorded or recorded were damaged or lost.
Bad!
George where are you?
