Belize: A Tax-Free Paradise
Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, is located on the eastern coast of Central America within the Caribbean Basin, bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. At 23,000 sq km, Belize is ten times smaller than the UK with a population of just under 330,000. The most populated areas are Belize City, the capital of the country, which is located on the coast, Belmopan in the center of the country, and Corozal in the north, near the border with Mexico.
The climate is the hottest of the year with an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit), and the humidity is heated by strong sea breezes. Belize, however, is located in the Caribbean hurricane zone; The monsoon season starts in June and lasts until November.
Cayes (pronounced keys), offshore atolls, and barrier reefs are Belize’s main tourist attractions. The Barrier Reef, which is 185 miles long, is the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. Cayes are islands and/or mangroves, which are located between the land and the barrier, on the coast, and inside or inside the coastal barrier.
The island’s reefs, contrasted by its palm trees, offer excellent opportunities for snorkeling, sailing, fishing, boating, sailing, canoeing, and kayaking, as well as bird and turtle habitats.
Belize is a melting pot of cultures and cultures. Its ethnic groups are about 50% Mestizo (people with European and Amerindian ancestry), 25% Creole (descendants of African slaves and mostly British foresters), 10% Maya (direct descendants of colonial people), 6% Garifuna (descendants of Carib, Arawak, and West Africa) and another 9%. However, the country is ethnically united, and although Christianity (Catholicism and Protestantism) are the main religions, other religious beliefs are allowed.
The British first settled in Belize in the 1600s, primarily to harvest and export tropical hardwoods, especially mahogany. After a major conflict between Spain and England, Belize became a British colony in 1871. The country became independent in 1964 and the country’s name was changed from British Honduras to Belize in 1973.
Due to Belize’s ancient links with Britain, English is the official language (although Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and Mayan are widely spoken throughout the country) and the legal system is based on common law. These factors combine to make Belize a suitable destination for retirees from English-speaking countries, especially when it comes to buying real estate, and it is no surprise that the country has become home to many British and American expatriates.
Economically, Belize has historically been dependent on sugar, but tourism is now a major contributor to GDP and there is a large economic activity. Although the Belizean Government struggled to raise debt and repay its debt in the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis, the country is financially stable. A long border dispute with neighboring Guatemala aside (which was decided in favor of Belize by the UN in 1975), Belize is a peaceful country. Crime, especially gang-related street crime, is a problem, but it is limited to certain areas of Belize City. There is a low risk of terrorism.
The currency of Belize is the Belize Dollar (BZD) which is equivalent to the US Dollar at a rate of BZD2 to USD1. Most hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators accept US currency, traveler’s checks, or credit cards. However, in Belize, make sure you pay in which dollar!
