You Haven’t Got the Sense God Gave a Goose – Or Have You?
“You don’t know that God gave Goose!” Almost every time I make a mistake growing up, that’s what I hear. So, I started watching geese. I soon realized two things; I LOVE watching Geese and geese are not stupid! I’ve spent hours watching geese, and I’ve read a lot about why they do what they do. As a Shepherd and Military Leader I have learned the lessons of “Goose Sense”. I want to share the teachings and how they affect our lives as believers in Jesus Christ.
PRINCIPLE #1: When each goose flaps its wings it creates a “lift” or “lift” for the birds that follow. By flying in a “V” formation, it is said that the whole group can fly 70% farther than each bird flying alone. A few years ago, when Cheri and I were driving from Maryland to Missouri, we watched hundreds of thousands of Geese in flight! Estimates were 750,000 to 900,000 geese! The sky got really dark in the middle of the day with huge flocks of Geese for over ten kilometers as we drove! It was one of the most beautiful sights we have ever seen! WOW! (I say that backwards – WOW!)
LESSON #1: Christian believers share a sense of community and unity through Jesus Christ. With the VISION from God, we can easily achieve God’s goals for us as we “GROW” with each other and walk in the goal of fellowship. “But you, Timothy, belong to God; so run away from all these evils, follow what is right and good, and live a life devoted to God with faith, love, patience, and gentleness; . Hold fast the eternal life that God has given you, which you have accepted in the presence of many witnesses. (Bible, 1 Timothy 6:11-12, New Testament Written in Modern English). Good thinking means that people do good to others.
POINT TWO: When a goose doesn’t make it, it suddenly feels pulled and refuses to fly on its own. It goes back into formation to take advantage of the carrying capacity of the whole group and avoid wind blasts from the rest of the geese that are shooting. Remember the scene in the movie “Top Gun” when Maverick and Goose (weird, huh) got caught in the “jet wash” of their wings and ended up falling into the ocean? It’s the same idea with geese.
LESSON #2: There is a lot of “pull and resistance” from the world when we try to RISE on our own! We must be willing to allow others to HELP “carry our burdens” – and we must be willing to HELP other people carry their burdens! Learn to do “Random Acts of Kindness” for others. Help an elderly woman put her groceries in the car. Take your friend’s pages. Take food from a sick person. Ask to put the children of a young family to sleep. Give a restaurant gift certificate to your pastor and his wife. Our oldest daughter had twins in ND and we were planning to ride a motorcycle from MO to the fire when a family from our church called and said they wanted to buy us plane tickets so we could get there as soon as possible. I planned to say “no” because I was looking forward to the trip, but then they dropped the “B” word. He said, “It would be a great BLESSING to us if you would let us do this!” I had to agree there, because I learned a long time ago that “Being a blessing to someone brings a Blessing to us.” Having a positive attitude means spending quality time with other believers. Share Jesus with those you love so that your family and close friends will become other believers.
POINT THREE: When the lead goose takes off, it goes back to its original position and the other goose immediately flies back to where it is. All the geese, except for the sick, take their time on the theme of design. No arguing, no arguing, no arguing, they just do it! It’s part of being a goose!
LESSON #3: Church ministry is NOT for paid pastors. It is not just for Deacons and Elders. Every believer should be involved in the ministry of the church. It pays to take turns working hard and it’s good to share leadership roles. Like geese, we rely on each other’s gifts and talents. After all, when our constant goal is for Jesus Christ to receive glory, praise, honor, and glory – it doesn’t matter who does the actual WORK! See Colossians 3:23-24. Every believer is a follower – a follower of Jesus Christ and His little shepherds in the flock. But every believer is ALSO a leader – based on your spiritual gifts and talents, and it is important that you use those gifts and talents to do good things for God’s kingdom. Good thinking means believers doing good for the kingdom of God and other pilgrims of the kingdom.
GOOD FACT #4: All the geese flying in order to “HONK” to encourage the geese in front to “keep going” to achieve the goal!
LESSON # 4: I BEG YOU to make sure your “EXPERIENCE” is STRENGTHENED in nature! FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE – FOR THE KINGDOM’S SAKE – ANYTIME you are speaking TO or ABOUT anyone else – make sure you say ONLY GOOD, “UPDATED,” LOVING, AND ENCOURAGING! There is no place in the kingdom of God and there is no place in the life of a Christian for gossip, backbiting, backbiting, “denial,” backbiting, and collusion! “Beloved, if God so loved us, we should also love one another. Churches are GROWING with encouragement and “uplifting”! Growing churches are HAPPY churches! Our individual and collective tasks are to “be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ, the beloved Son of God.” (Romans 8:29). Let’s be “DEAR” PEOPLE to each other for Jesus’ sake! Let’s say NICE things to each other. Let’s say NICE things about each other. Good thinking means encouraging each other to “go on” to achieve the goal of the reward of God’s higher calling in Jesus Christ!
HELPFUL TIP #5: When a goose gets sick and can’t continue, two other geese stop making designs and follow him to help and protect him. They stay with it until it dies or can fly again. Then they leave by another route or reach their animals.
LESSON # 5: I AM A GOOSE SENSE God gave believers a “Goose Sense!” His words teach us to be united in difficult and good times. They teach us to pick each other up when we fall. When relationships fail, when children rebel, when jobs go wrong, when bad things happen to good people, when people die prematurely, when problems come (and eventually come to us all), God’s Word has a word for believers. Galatians 6:2 says “Carry one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Verses 9-10 remind us: “Let us not be heavy in doing good; for in his season we shall reap if we are not weak; of the family of faith.” Good sense of the goose means standing together in good times and bad, standing up for each other, and standing up for those in need.
TIP #6: Two geese find each other and mate for life. They live and travel and make children together until one of them dies. Then the other goose will find another wife, and they will marry again for the rest of their lives.
BEST LESSON LESSON # 6 Monogamous relationships only make for the BEST LIFE! In the beginning, this is how God planned it! (See Genesis 2-3). Second, it prevents many problems, including divorce, sexual sin, broken and mixed families, financial problems, children’s behavior problems, etc. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that these things don’t happen in monogamous relationships, but statistics show that they are more common when people are in multiple relationships. (And my 34 years of ministry has taught me that “the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence!) It is very gratifying to see so many young people in our community deciding to remain celibate and celibate until marriage – that is definitely a step in the right direction from the generation. mine (being a teenager in the late 60’s and early 70’s during the “sexual transition.”) If you or your teens are interested, go to True Love Waits online. True love means waiting for someone you know God wants. live with him for the rest of your life, and then live with him for the rest of your life!
In short, what does GOOD GOOSE SENSE LESSONS say to believers?
Love one another. Pray for one another. Encourage each other. Stand by each other. Lift each other up. Help each other up and out. Stand up for each other. Be the way. Love one another. (I know, I said it before, but it needs saying twice, right?)
I pray that all believers will hear and learn from the geese. Do you feel that God gave the goose? You act like you’re doing good things for each other Goose SENSE. You act like you’re doing good GOOSE SENSE things for each other. Use your GOOS SENSE – you’ll be glad you did!
