Malcolm X made many mistakes about women. In his famous autobiography, Malcolm X tells us the story of his life but upon further examination all the women in his life end up on the short end of the stick.

Malcolm and Laura

Laura was a young girl who dated Malcolm X when he was a 14-year-old boy and worked as a soda clerk. Laura later became a drug addict and prostitute. Malcolm admits his role in the breakup and tells Alex Haley that he messed up her life. Fortunately, Laura was the only woman to have a posthumous title.

Malcolm and Sophia

Sophia was the white girl that Malcolm chose over Laura at the dance. She was a white girl who apparently had the disease of the jungle and it became a big part of her young life. Later, Malcolm convinces her and her sister to join them in his robbery scheme. Later, after grabbing jewelry and being held at gunpoint, Malcolm turns the evidence against them and both are given time in a women’s correctional facility.

Malcolm and Ella

Ella was Malcolm X’s older sister whom he took from Boston to live with him. He was Malcolm’s guardian and loved him dearly. Ella was his best friend in life. When he went to prison it was Ella who worked hard to move him from high to low security. But, when Malcolm left the Nation of Islam and went to Mecca, Ella, who was an orthodox Muslim, saved her money for the trip to Mecca and the Hajj. Malcolm offers to lend her the money she saved to go, Ella agrees and Malcolm admits to Alex Haley before he dies that he never paid her back. Even after receiving several book leads from his biography.

Malcolm and Betty Shabazz

Malcolm’s wife Betty Shabazz bore him six daughters. She was a perfect Muslim wife and mother, devoted to her husband and his cause. He was slapped out of anger by Malcolm for not being advised and failing to steal Malcolm’s planned but shot Sammy. Finally, the master of Elijah Muhammad who was used by Malcolm X to give the father’s case to Elijah Muhammad to discredit Mr. Muhammad and build his organizations. Alex Haley writes that Malcolm X took the women to a lawyer to present these charges to Elijah Muhammad and it was Malcolm X who spoke on behalf of the women. These mistakes that Malcolm X made about women were all taken from his autobiographical statements and paint a depressing picture of our beloved but controversial leader.
