Tales of Xillia

Ah Japanese RPG’s, a staple of my gaming life. In Japan, the market is full of such games (apparently that is why they are called JRPG), but there have been two main series among the countless titles of this genre: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. There has been one more series to follow behind the two, and it would be the Tales series. Starting back on the Super Famicom and Tales of Phantasia in 1995, the series has released 14 games in the main series, and 9 pages. With the latest release in North America, Tales of Xillia 2 upon us, I wanted to look at the original title of Tales of Xillia for PS3. After playing the game extensively and logging about 50 hours, I feel happy and ready to start again.

The game begins with the opportunity to play as Jude Mathis, a good medical student, or the mysterious Milla Maxwell. This will affect some cutscenes and other playable events throughout the game. Regardless of who you choose, you will meet a group of characters, 6 playable in total. These characters grow and develop throughout the game. I found myself going back to previous towns to check on people who had already played a part in the story, and were rewarded with reunion cutscenes, which I’ve never seen before. It makes you feel like the characters are alive after the main story has passed them by.

Story has always been interesting in the Tales community, and it continues in Xillia. The main quest line is a roller-coaster of ups and downs, surprises and twists. This game had me on the edge of my seat just trying to mentally prepare myself for what was to come. The story moves quickly, but never to the point where you ask yourself “Wait, what should I do now?”, and even if you get lost, the game has an “Event List” in it. you can find a summary of the story and everything that has happened so far. The story is always gripping and entertaining.

One thing that makes the Tales series different from the other two franchises I mentioned above is the combat. It may look like the same thing you’ve seen in Final Fantasy games, but it doesn’t take long to realize what’s so exciting about combat. When you engage an enemy, the screen switches to what Tales calls a battle map, four party members are there to engage in battle, but here’s the shooter, the battle plays out like a combat game with RPG elements such as skills and items. Combat is smooth and fun, and battles only last 10 to 1 minute, so you don’t get bored fighting wild monsters or limited levels like you would in a traditional RPG.

Most people would like the good before the bad, so I’ll start with the good: the noise. The sound in this game is absolutely high quality. From the voice of doing things to the sound of breaking the fist of Judah to be enemies to the sound of words; The sound in this game is captivating and I loved every second of it. I can’t say enough good things about the voice acting in this game as every character speaks with the right emotion, be it happy, silly, sad or angry – they all work perfectly. My favorite voice in the game would have to be older Rowen because he sounds like the gentleman they portray him on screen.

Sadly, I can’t give the same praise to the artwork. Although I understand that the game was released two years ago in Japan, I feel that they could have cleaned up some of the game graphics and cleaned up the gameplay a bit. Sometimes the words don’t match the words, and sometimes the videos sound a little slow. One thing I can say is that the game has great anime cutscenes in the heat of the story. When the going gets tough, Xillia brings video clips with powerful and beautiful animations. Although the graphics of the game are not the best, I can say that some areas of the game are impressive. I found myself stepping back to just look at the scenery many times. Overall, the graphics aren’t terrible, but they aren’t great either.

The game has a lot of things to do when you beat the game, from hidden bosses, action, to Alfried Treasure to collect. Even after finishing the story, I managed to put an extra 15 hours into the game. The most popular addition is the dungeon expansion, Magnus Zero. It’s not the only thing under twenty, but after defeating the boss at the end, you have the chance to go through a very difficult time again.

Legends of Xillia is a solid buy for any RPG fan, and even if you’re interested in the genre, this game is a must-see. This game gives you what you pay for: a 45+ hour long story with tons of optional gameplay on top of it. Overall, this game is a welcome addition to the amazing Tales series, and I can’t recommend it enough. Check out your local Slackers today!
