A 3rd Time To Die by George A Bernstein – Book Review

What is a guest?

This is a love story with a mystery at its heart, a paranormal mystery. Why can Ashley Easton speak French so well? Why is he able to ride a horse successfully after just a few weeks? Who is the mysterious boy she meets at the dress competition, and why is he so attractive? The Third Time of Death written by George A. Bernstein is a story of love and mystery, rolled into one. He uses the idea of reincarnation as an interesting plot device.

Our first glimpse of Ashley Easton is of a woman rescuing a horse:

“Hey stop that!” His scream was useless, he hit the gate with the side of the pitchfork. (Bernstein, p. 25)

The horse has always represented passion and desire in literature, and A 3rd Time to Die is no exception. Ashley’s new horse brings joy and energy into her life and makes a new relationship stronger. Ashley is revived and strengthened by rescuing a horse; it also brings great relief how his life has changed. Ashley is a social person who knows her thoughts and is financially independent. She feels great, but it takes a long time for her to act on this idea: this is Ashley Easton’s problem. The reader feels frustrated at times, and is glad that it is finally going away.

Ashley’s lover, Craig Thornton is handsome and everything Ashley needs and wants: he is the polar opposite of Ashley’s husband Keith, and he is handsome, fun, interested in Ashley, shares his interests, and cares. Their relationship changes over time, and as they learn more about each other, their characters grow more mysterious and seductive. A mistake or two, however, would have helped make Craig more authentic.

Craig Thornton is also different from Ashley because his marriage is falling apart, but it’s not his fault: his wife is the one cheating. Bernstein thus establishes interesting parallels and contrasts in relationships. The couple, Keith and Toni, are not happy people. Keith is a completely lost man in a relationship: he ignores the children and takes the mistress. I would have liked a little more shade for this couple to add real personality problems: Keith doesn’t help with the kids, he doesn’t like anything about his wife, and he’s nasty in some of his relationships; but he has no redeeming quality. He is a little evil for being human. He seems to have no saving grace: I know Craig is lovely but Keith must have been better at one point.

This book is about relationships. Men and women in The Third Time of Death they don’t want just anyone but someone special. In the early 1895s, Charles sees in Victoria, a woman who is “loving, passionate and ambitious” (Bernstein, p. 6). They love him for these qualities, and Ashley and Craig alike are looking for very special qualities.

Couples are important in this book – people click and realize they are meant to be together. The Australian Psychological Society website states: “New fields of psychology, particularly transpersonal psychology and ecopsychology, are taking a more holistic view of people as mind, body, and soul. a human life that goes beyond our ordinary existence and the selfishness of the skin including the reality of nature and the environment. (Australian Psychology Society website. Transpersonal Psychology) The difficulties of the married couple and the reborn spirit that must be overcome make for a very interesting device in this book. The question of whether Ashley and Craig will survive their love, and who is against them and wishes them harm is a difficult question.

The last major figure is psychologist Dr Feldman. He is an interesting character: he is helpful, but skeptical and his insight and understanding drive the plot. Feldman is one of Joseph Campbell’s supporters. In Monomyth, Cambell explains: “For those who have not resisted the call, the hero’s first journey consists of a guardian (usually a young or old man) who offers charms against the dragon he is close to. What the image represents is the positive, protective power of fate.” (Wikipedia. Monomyth) Feldman helps Ashley and Craig understand what is going on. This relationship is the most satisfying part of the book.

Ashley and Craig love to go horseback riding. As we have seen, the horse always represents strong emotions and passionate desires in literature and this is also true in The Third Time to Die. Since DH Lawrence, the horse has been a great symbol of sexuality, freedom and power. Ashley’s horse in the book represents all the freedom of her youth, the rekindled sexuality that her unfulfilled marriage has robbed her of, and links to the past. The second meaning of the spiritual animal of the horse is the balance between the natural and damaged parts of your personality. So Ashley is more real when she is with her horse, Injun, than when she is in her house. He feels comfortable, his conversation with Craig is natural, but he also learns a lot about himself and the issues that bother him: “Jeez, that’s when it started! Like now. Why does this thought only bother him when he jumps a horse?” (Bernstein, p. 87). This is the hallmark of the culture/culture dichotomy.

The structure of the story is multi-part where the first long part establishes various relationships. Ashley spends a lot of time analyzing her (hopeless) marriage, before deciding that there is nothing she can do. This episode was long and drawn out. I wondered why it took so long to find an answer to this question. Once the relationship with Craig was established and Bernstein was able to bring the two together, the novel went from strength to strength.

In the final episode, the plot lines are drawn to a satisfying conclusion with the lovers’ relationship with their fate, and the events of the enemies are neatly resolved. The final tragic climax is well done and keeps the reader thinking until the last minute.

The role of money in the novel is interesting: Ashley is well off, thanks to her Dad’s money. He uses strategies and practices and makes them help him change his life, not just make more money. This is a good job for women.

The Third Time of Death it’s a love story with twists and turns, an amazing mystery and an interesting hero and an amazing plot and action that was very satisfying. The characters develop in interesting ways through time and as the novel progresses. The relationships were interesting and well drawn. The plot lines come to a satisfying conclusion, and the lovers’ relationship and the mystery of the future tragedy are successfully resolved. The ending is effective and the answer is unexpected and surprising. I am happy to rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
