Stoop, Young Man
They laugh at the proud, but the humble give grace. Proverbs 3:34
Benjamin Franklin was visiting the former Puritan preacher, Cotton Mather, in Boston. Cotton took a liking to the young printer despite his opposition to established religion. Both men loved books, so it was natural for them to go to Mather’s large library, a collection of about 3,000 books. That would be a great library today; it was very surprising in 1724.
Cotton Mather was the target of a few barbs in the newspaper Franklin worked for, the Courant. Cotton showed his superior character by letting Benjamin know that he had no hatred or resentment for what he had said.
As they were leaving the library Mather said to Franklin, “Stop!
Franklin didn’t know what Mather meant so he kept walking. But when he shook his head at the low price, he knew.
Preacher Mather could not let a moment of instruction pass, so he told Ben Franklin, “Let this be a warning to you not to keep your head up all the time. and you will miss many hard bullets.”
Scorners raise their heads. They always seem to misjudge others. Their laughs and comments have a condescending tone to them. Scorners exalt themselves
people, see them as immature, perceptive or funny.
Sometimes it is difficult to know if the scorner really thinks he is superior, or if he is retaliating against his self-deprecation. A playground bully who pushes little kids around is not tough; they are more afraid than most children who push. He has just learned to use his greatness to his advantage by intimidating others. Stand up to the bully one time and most of the time they will back down and leave you alone. A scorner is always a bully. He pushes and shoves with words. Don’t play games with him. The best way to slow down a scorner is to be gentle in his face.
God often has a way of reducing people who exalt themselves above others and treat them with humiliating and humiliating things. God despises the proud but gives grace to the humble.
That is the lesson that Cotton Mather taught Benjamin Franklin. “Stop, boy, you—as you’re going through this country—and you’ll miss a lot of hard bullets.” In other words, don’t have the pride of a scorner, be humble.
A few years later Ben Franklin told Mather’s son, “This counsel, which strikes me in the head, has often been useful to me, and I often think of it when I see pride defiled and calamities brought upon men by holding their heads too high.”
With all his accomplishments and accomplishments on both sides of the Atlantic, Franklin knew the importance of keeping everything in order. As a wise saying goes, “When pride comes, shame comes;
Life is full of low beams. Remember to kneel.
