There are few parts of our history that can be distilled to concrete ideas and symbols as the old west. This particular time and place in American history has grown from its history to a legend of true mythic stature. As a young country, America has not yet had time to develop the legends and myths of the old world. However, Old West trivia and the stories of its greatest heroes are certainly the closest that we have come yet.
An old west quiz will primarily be referring to the events that took place in the end of the nineteenth century in the western part of the United Stated. The term “the west” at the time, usually meant everything on the far side of the Mississippi.
The Old West brings to mind ranchers and cattlemen, explorers and gunslingers. It is the image of the two extremes in the west which are the most commonly discussed, and portrayed. The first extreme being the lawman, the gunfighter that kept the piece with a star on his chest and a gun on his hip. The second being the outlaw, robbing trains, banks, and stealing horses and rustling cattle.
Old West trivia has many famous lawmen to tell the stories of, but there is surely no one more famous in that regard than Wyatt Earp. Earp, along with his brothers and Doc Holiday, were involved in the famous shootout at the O.K. Coral in Tombstone, Arizona. This single incident has formed the basis for more stories, books, and movies to be written about the old west than any dozen other incidents combined.
An Old West quiz isn’t just going to be about the lawmen though. The outlaws are going to be given some consideration as well. Probably the two most famous of the breed would be Billy the Kid, and Jesse James. James was possibly originally a fighter from the civil war that may have been driven to become an outlaw due to the hard times in later years. He would eventually be assassinated by Robert Ford. Billy the Kid was a charismatic and dashing young figure with a habit for violence. Billy the Kid was hunted down and killed by a man who may have been his friend, the Sheriff Pat Garrett.
There are other figures that make up the best of old west trivia as well. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Poncho Villa, the Pinkerton Detective Agency, Sitting Bull and more are all legendary figures that compose the mythic landscape of the American Old West.
