Good Neighbor Sam Movie Review – Starring Jack Lemmon, Romy Schneider, and Dorothy Provine

“Good Neighbor Sam” is a great comedy from the 60s about an advertising executive named Sam Bissell, played by Jack Lemmon, known by everyone in his company as a good family man. Things take a turn for the worse for Sam when he meets Min’s wife’s friend Janet Lagerlorf (Romy Schneider), who will receive a fortune if he can prove that he has a happy marriage. She is in the process of divorcing her husband and finds out that she has to pretend to be married to Sam to fool her stupid cousins.

The plan goes well at first until Sam Nurdlinger’s client sees him kissing Janet after she goes to work to continue the practice. Now he feels that he must fool Nurdlinger into thinking that Janet is his wife.

One day Janet’s husband arrives and threatens Sam. Soon she finds that she has to do something too, so she pretends to be married to Min.

A critical moment occurs when Sam discovers that one of his assistants has decided to use a photo of himself and Janet on a Nurdlinger’s milk poster, using Sam’s wife’s name. Sam also learns that Janet’s relatives have hired a detective to spy on them. The detective is wrong, however, thinking that Sam is really married to Janet and sneaking around with Min. Sam is fine with this, realizing that this is better than learning the truth. Sam takes the detective home and discovers that he shouldn’t let him see any signs on the road, so every time he passes by one, he just goes around the corner, nearly killing him.

That night, Sam and Janet decided to paint all the signs. Min gets fed up with the whole plot and threatens to leave if he gets out, but he does anyway. They spend the whole night painting faces on all the billboards. In the end they win, and Janet receives her inheritance of 15 million dollars, one million of which she intends to give to Sam and his wife to go through the process. Min changes his mind about leaving and the two return to their normal, but millionaire, lives.
