Writing Haunted House Stories – Building Atmosphere Through Setting

Atmosphere affects your personality in a safe way. Think about the houses that may be in your area. You know the one: It’s the building that pedestrians cross the street to avoid. It is a building where high school students hope to spend the night, beyond the tower doors to explore the strange things that lie in its mysterious shadows. Although nothing visible has happened, your characters are scared. This fear comes from the atmosphere: The environment that surrounds your home and the people you love. Atmosphere is what it is, and that atmosphere should haunt the reader when the story ends.

So where do you start? Creating a story of a skyscraper is a dangerous and difficult task. To make things easier on yourself, set a date and time from the beginning of your story. If you write an introduction, start the story with your date and time or, at the very least, give an overview of the decade. Maybe your character is listening Disco Inferno Before the psychopath starts setting the house on fire. Maybe your character is shivering in the shadows, his bonnet drenched in sweat and praying that his lamp will burn long enough to be saved. This not only sets your personal preferences, but also gives you the opportunity to add a little extra flair and represent your story.

Engage Your Readers Using the Right Word

Using the right words can also set the scene in your home story. Consider this sentence:

Beverly Harris entered the house.

Not very creative at all. There are no settings and actions are not explained at all. Let’s try another set of words:

Beverly, overwhelmed by the terrible accident, entered the door.

Good. He crawled and express more powerfully than words he walked. This is an official description that readers will enjoy. But can’t we write this sentence in less and less dangerous words? I think we can:

The house destroyed him.

Scary, descriptive and simple. This makes the reader feel uncomfortable; therefore, compassion should be your goal as a writer. For your readers to feel what your characters are feeling.

Location, Location, Location

Your apartment is a person like everyone else. It must have personality. It should draw your characters into it, just as the protagonist hunts the common man. It must have personality and history. Your protagonist wants something and your house wants something too. So what kind of personality does your house have? Consider the place. It could be a large bayou house decorated in French-Creole, or it could be a small two-story house in Washington State like in Stephen King’s. Alan Wake. It’s probably as old as the citadel that sits on top of the cliff above the village. Each of these buildings must reflect its place, and its personality must be revealed through the protagonist’s mind. If your house could talk, would it have an accent? How can you show that? Decorations? Construction? The location of your apartment defines its personality. Let it do the talking. Let it lure your protagonist back into his mire.

Another way to add personality to your home is to recreate the environment according to the way people speak in their area. People in the Deep South speak differently in Miami and people in Miami speak differently than people in Montana. People gossip about each other and each person has a different opinion on life. Apply it to your apartment building. No matter where you are, your house has a backstory and people will gossip. What they say and how they say it can reveal a lot about the personality of your home. Every time your character hears a story, their perspective changes. For example, Unlimited by Douglas Clegg, some of the people who live in Nightmare House see it as an ordinary house at first. As soon as he starts hearing strange stories, paranoia takes over and soon the house takes a turn for the worse. No, it does not change physically. What changes is how one sees the house. Your home is another quality that needs to be mentioned. Everyone has secrets; your old house too.

Basics are important

There are already several home movies and books that take place in different locations around the world. There are literally hundreds if not more thousands what happens inside the forest inside the forest. For your horror story to survive the cutthroat competition, it needs to be unique. It should bring something new to an idea that has been done over and over again. Being unique is key to bringing your story to life. Good writers must be flexible. Instead of a cabin in the Canadian mountains, maybe your story is about a houseboat in the Puget Sound. Or maybe consider moving your southern location to tropical coastal Africa where there are palm trees, monkeys and spiders as big as coconuts. The basics don’t have to be that extreme anymore. Maybe your property is in a Colonial American neighborhood in Massachusetts but the architecture is very modern.

The last thing to consider when choosing the first place for your home renovation story is the lighting and atmosphere. Keep in mind that the farther your home is from the equator, the longer your daylight hours are. For example, a tower located in the lowest part of South America, has a full moon of total darkness in the winter and a full moon of full daylight in the summer.

Enter If You Think

HP Lovecraft was a master at creating atmosphere through setting. He used the description of the place and the neighborhood to give the reader a sense of horror long before the scene got closer to home. Take this example Indoor Picture:

… They climb the moonlit towers of ruined Rhine palaces and tumble down black-threaded stairs beneath the bloody stones of forgotten cities… Desolate trees and desolate mountains. [are] temples, and linger around the sinful monoliths of uninhabited islands… Their power, isolation, grotesqueness and ignorance combine to form a perfect part of the abomination.

This creates a high quality image using carefully selected adjectives and a forward approach. Although HP Lovecraft has exceeded the expectations of horror in the best way possible, award-winning author Joe Schreiber writes a true description of the Round House in one of his best haunted house stories: No Doors, No Windows:

… It was small, plain and narrow, with a curved and smooth concrete floor, almost round black walls that didn’t look like they were painted black but were carved from natural black material. light receptacle. There were no doors and no windows. Although the road appeared to be straight, it was curved, some kind of curve outside the light of the searchlight..

Both of these examples describe a multi-storey building that uses space and is structured in different ways. They work well because of the strong choice of words and clear, unnatural descriptions that go beyond the details of how one usually describes a house. Joe Schreiber didn’t just put it plainly: “The room was round.” Instead, he paints a picture so vivid that the reader immediately realizes that this room is not normal and that no sane person could enter it—especially if they only had a light.

When it’s a wonderful house no Amazing house?

An apartment building is not always a house. It can be a house or a condo on the beach. Sometimes they live in cemeteries where the spirits of the dead live, work and haunt like in Neil Gaiman’s book, The Book of Graves. Dilapidated factories, sewers, museums, prisons, schools, caves and toilets can all be stories about “dirty buildings”. All the same rules apply.

If you are serious about writing an essay on a skyscraper, then the best thing you can do and your essay is to read. Read every real estate article you can find. More information. Hundreds. See how they set the personality of the house. See how each author takes a different approach. Pay close attention to word choice and sentence flexibility. Read, read, read it.

Some of the best tips are:

No Doors, No Windows and Joe Schreiber

Bloody Horror and Macabre Stories and HP Lovecraft

Hell House by Richard Matheson

The Black Woman and Susan Hill

The Nightmare House Series and Douglas Clegg
