In 1909 Dale Carnegie was, by his own account, one of the most unhappy young men in New York. He used to sell cars to make money and was not doing well. He despised his job, his filthy furnished room and his muddy necks. He despised the cockroaches that lived in his room. After that he couldn’t take it anymore and decided to change his life – and he did. He stopped worrying and started moving forward. Around 1938 he decided to write this book and in 1944 it was published.

Carnegie describes methods that he himself has found effective in controlling the anxiety that plagues so many of us and methods that he has learned from many others. He interviewed hundreds of successful people to learn their methods.

In this book, Carnegie explains how to manage your anxiety and how to solve problems without anxiety. He discusses the negative effects of stress on your health and success. He teaches how to break the habit of worrying, seven ways to develop a state of mind that will bring you peace and happiness and the “perfect way” to overcome anxiety.

He tells us how and why not to worry about criticism, six ways to avoid fatigue and anxiety so that you don’t reduce your energy and how a group of successful men and women told him that they overcame anxiety including Dorothy Dix, Jim Birdsall, Jack Dempsey, John. D. Rockefeller and many others.

Reading/Writing Quality:

The book is easy to read and well organized. It is written so that an 8th grader can easily understand it but it is not easy. Like many of Carnegie’s books, this one has suggestions at the end of each chapter summarizing the concepts and telling the reader how to apply them.

Dale Carnegie (1888-1955) is widely recognized as one of the most successful educators of the 20th century. Since the publication of his first book in 1936, How to Win Friends and Influence People, his books and classes on public speaking and self-management has helped millions of people for over 70 years.

1. If you want to avoid worrying, stay in “tight rooms” every day and leave yesterday and tomorrow things that you cannot control or touch today.

3. Count your blessings, not your problems. Your mind is focused on what you focus on – you can choose what worries you – do so.
