Metal Detector Hunter – My Story
Metal detection is a major trend. Years ago in the early 70’s I was in a barbershop waiting to get a haircut and they had some expensive magazines on the table. As I was looking through the pages it showed all these guys with their metal detectors showing the gold, coins, and other artifacts they had found. Well that’s all it took for me to be hooked. After I got my hair cut I ran to the local bookstore and bought every treasure hunting and metal detector magazine I could find.
When I got home, I read both magazines back and forth. My wife came over to see what I was doing, she gave me her look and left, what does she know. OK Now what type of metal detector should you buy? When I looked through these metal detector magazines there was a section to choose from. There are many different types of metal detectors, some are cheap and some go for a second loan.
However I go the cheaper route of recording metal. How hard can it be, wait for the beep and dig up the treasure. I’m going to the Wal-Mart of Wal-Mart with dollar signs in my eyes and dreaming of being in one of those magazines. OK I got my new metal detector for only forty bucks and I’m going home. Take it out of the box and start reading the instructions, here comes the woman again, she looks at me, shakes her head and walks away, go do your makeup, you’re scaring me.
After reading the instructions and setting up my iron detector and the condom it came with I was ready to get rich. We lived in such an old house that I thought there might be some good things buried in the lawn. After about four hours of rocking this thing and hearing every kind of beep I can think of even though my house is built on a landfill. My metal detector consisted of tin cans, nails, aluminum foil, and rusted metal. How could this not be one red cent.
Now my neighbor sees me and comes over to see what I’m doing since my yard looks like it’s been blown up with all the holes in it. I show him my metal detector (which he didn’t know existed) and ask what I’m doing. I explained to him as best I could about metal detection and he seemed impressed. So he reads the instructions and we go for another hour. Same results, no nonsense. OK, I’ll show my neighbor the magazine I bought and take home. Look at my poor yard, clean all my metal I’ve found and drink beer and try to figure out what’s wrong.
A few hours later my neighbor comes back glassy-eyed and pumping and babbling about metal detectors. A boy has been caught. He started telling me that he just read all the magazines and that the metal detector I just bought was useless. It made me feel really good. Anyway he says let’s go to the deal and buy a good metal detector. We will share everything we get.
We choose a European metal detector, which cost about two hundred and fifty dollars per unit. Well, this has more bells and whistles than my single knober. The instructions are detailed and tell you what to pay attention to and how deep the item can be and how to dig without damaging the yard, cool. We started at his yard as my wife was still not happy with what I did at home.
Well here we go. About ten minutes into the search we find a sign, dig in and go down and lo and behold it’s a quarter. Oh, you thought we just won the lottery. Well, this was a good thing our metal detector was doing what it was supposed to do, getting rich. Three hours later we found about sixty-five cents, and a wheat penny dated 1943. Well, that’s all it took. The wheat penny was like gold, with no history, who lost it, how long it was buried, etc.
Now my neighbor remembers that one of his friends used to be a paper boy. We go to his house and tell them what we have just found, the metal detector. They think we are nuts but they agree to let us hunt. Are you ready? Five minutes is a good sign we dig half of freedom. Well, his friend thought we were crazy for what we did. We continued our search until dark, and what we found that day was: half a free standing, three dimes of mercury, five Roosevelts, four washings, and eleven pennies of wheat. Not bad for a beginner. Most of the finds were about three inches deep.
We continue to use the same metal detector for months to come. Visiting relatives that we haven’t seen in years, not only to see them, but also because they lived in some old houses and wanted to hunt in their yards. We were very successful with our metal detector findings; In fact, one of the relatives had lost his wedding ring years ago and directed us to the area where he thought he had lost it.
About half an hour later, yup you guessed it we found the ring. I don’t think any of us have ever seen so many tears of joy, it made us feel good to get a steak dinner for our work. Metal Detecting was in our blood and we were on a high.
Buy now we all continued to read books and magazines about metallurgy. We shared thoughts and ideas about new hunting grounds. At some point we all agreed that we needed to buy our own metal detectors. We shared this for a long time with good results. In the end we agreed to sell the one we split the profits and get new ones. After some research we both decided on the Whites Metal Detector hip mount (Keeps the arms from getting tired) I can’t remember the brand maybe 6000 Di, but we both spent over six hundred bucks on our units. In our research we found that by using headphones we can hear the faintest hints of treasures buried deep. Also we were now equipped with old Bowie knives to cut our plugs, instead of a garden tool. He made my wife happy as we crushed everyone she was with. Oh now we had these baggies that we found, they keep the dirt in the pants pockets.
These metal detectors had all the bells and whistles, a very deep ID and an excellent penetration ID, an 8″ search coil, and could pick out valuables from waste areas and handle difficult conditions very well. It was tough, but through trial and error we figured it out quickly. very. Now that we had advanced metal detectors we decided to go back and revisit the places we had searched before. I would have missed what many found with our old metal detector. I think the new technology is in. Sometimes we would walk hours to a place, this was after a lot of research. ‘ono to make sure we had a chance to get something.
Living on the east coast of winter is evident and slowly putting a damper on our metal exposure. Hey look spring is here grab our detectors let’s go. Wait a minute the neighbor has an idea, let’s try underwater metal detectors. What did I say he’s crazy? He says no, he read it in the winter and with what we know now it would be easy to do. OK he told me. Now for some reason we go to Garret underwater metal detectors. We go all in on this, wet suit, boots, heavy belt, and carry bag, we might find we think we’re going underwater. Even so, hunting on land was limited. Digging underwater is not being able to see if your digging is difficult. In the water we put tall poles to place the group to determine if we have hunted. The first few times were slow, all we got was new coins, pulls, cans, and lead sets.
We went to explore an old pond and found that it was a well-known sinkhole years ago. I got permission from the owner (very important) and off we went. It was early in the morning and I had better ideas than to dive into the water and shake my metal detector. This was a small pool and I thought it wouldn’t take long. After about half an hour of searching I find a good sign, and raise a silver quarter, cold. The neighbor shouts as he looks to bring an old ring. This looks promising. Now I don’t feel sorry for being outside in the cold. Another sign is to lift it up and below it I see the glitter of gold and diamonds. The sacred cow is a wedding ring, and a large diamond. Well I’m going to start yelling at my neighbor to come and see what I found. Now they were happy. We stayed there for about four hours, the days metal detectors find: my diamond ring, a few silver coins, a gold necklace, and other sinks. My neighbor: 3 sets of rings, gold metal, silver metal, and silver coins. This was our most successful day in metal detecting.
Winter is back now and my efforts have changed along with a new job. When spring rolls around I find I don’t have time to metal sense anymore, plus we’re traveling. My neighbor sympathizes with me but talks about the good times we’ve had during our two years metal detecting together. We are moving and I no longer have time to do what I love. My neighbor continues, joining a metalworking club and soon becomes the club’s president. I see him from time to time and he still hunts. He showed me one of his biggest finds, a small pouch containing five Indian gold coins that he had found in an old picnic area. I sold everything of value that I had acquired over the years, including my metal recorder.
I had accumulated a small fortune over the years; I sold 1200 dollars to get what I got. My wife, well she was very happy when I showed her that diamond ring, she still has it today. He went and appraised them for fifty dollars. Good news I will be retiring soon, guess what I love to be, Metal Detecting.
