85 Year Old Man Learns How To Read

Have you ever wanted to do something really bad but were afraid to try? Do you want to learn something new but don’t have time? Have you ever spent years and years thinking about this in the end? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, read on.

Have you ever heard the saying that you are never too old to learn something new? Well in this article I will tell you this is true.

I have been friends for twenty years with a man named Bob. In all these years, what he has always wanted to do was to learn to read. I tried to help him but in the end he found out that he was dyslexic.

When he was growing up in Northern California he didn’t have a formal education. He spent his childhood working in the fields with his family picking fruits and vegetables.

Bob earned money tending a large hotel dining room, a traffic policeman, and eventually worked as a cement contractor. While working at the cement plant he became a supervisor with his excellent skills and fluency in Spanish and English.

Bob told me he wanted to write a book one day on finishing cement. He was truly one of the best in his career. He knows how to finish the cement and is the one who is called to correct the mistakes of others.

It’s amazing how much he managed to function in his daily life. Let’s not forget his work and knowledge of knowing his ABC’s is a miracle.

He actually told me when he was finishing the cement that he would walk on the freeway more often. It was difficult for him to read the signs and he was often late for work after missing an exit on his route.

This is the most amazing person I have ever met in my life. He is very creative and can make and repair anything with his hands. Now at the age of 85, he decided to fulfill his dream and learn to read.

He is learning to read through an excellent program sponsored by the public library system. He has been on the program for five months and can read like a semi pro. He is very proud and I am proud. He told me that he can read all his bills and pay them without the help of friends or family. What a confidence boost it was. I want everyone to know that you are never too old to achieve your goals and dreams.

Imagine what he would have been if he had had an education. After you read the world opens up in your mind and can soar.

Bob says it to everyone young and old. “If you don’t know how to read, learn!”

Being a children’s book author I always ask children if they like to read. I am sad to say that most of the children I talk to do not like to read – or have no desire to read. The last 10-year-old girl I asked her this question – She said to me: “Why should I learn to read?”
