Symbolism and Medicine in the Mountains of China

I was flying down one of China’s windy roads in a taxi, racing around sharp corners and steep cliffs a thousand meters on one side and going around and around hundreds of tourists and cars. We were moving faster than they were running on Pender Island, home. I was overwhelmed by people and pollution, considering all the stories that my friends in the village told me, warning me about such things. China is known as a secret place, but at that time I felt that this secret was already there – the new China was a chaos full of disordered people.

I was going to Lu Shan, a famous mountain town and park, to experience the countryside away from the busy Traditional Chinese Hospital, in Changsha, Hunan, where I work as an acupuncturist and as a Traditional Chinese Medical doctor in training. I chose to visit Lu Shan because it was a world heritage site and a UNESCO Geo Park, one of the 27 protected areas in China. The forested mountainous region of Jiang Xi province is home to many bamboo forests, lakes and wild animals and is a place where poets, political leaders and religious leaders have come for thousands of years to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, which is sometimes revealed in the middle of the blind mountains. .

As we walked, we passed many stone carvings of famous poets or sayings that have inspired the Chinese people over the years. I came to relax but I was scared! I tried to listen to my translator, who was busy translating the taxi driver’s story. The taxi driver was taking us to a beautiful place called The Three stepped Waterfall and he was explaining how some tourists quietly said that they saw a picture of a sparrow in the waterfall and now after a few years everyone in China wanted to come to Lu Shan. look at this wonder.

On a trip to Three Tall Falls, I saw how different the parks in China were from those in Canada. The entire path to the falls was paved with granite, which was common in all the parks I visited. A lot of work, going through hundreds of kilometers of other parks. I imagine that the rocks protect against erosion – thousands of tourists visit these parks every year – or they protected people from getting their shoes and clothes dirty. Sometimes I spent two or three hours climbing the stone steps to get to the top of a rock that might be called Yellow Dragon Head or something, sweating all the time because of the extreme heat and humidity, to get to the top to see the Chinese families. , between the ages of 2 and 80, dressed in a proper western outfit, high boots and all!

Symbols of poetry also spread throughout the universe. Apart from the sparrow in the waterfall I saw other symbols – two rocks that looked like lovers meeting again after a long separation, or on top of a hill that looked like a student carrying his book deeply. These objects were inscribed with inscriptions. Chinese people seem to appreciate ideas that are quick and especially those that have a deep meaning to the world we live in.

This concept was already apparent to me as I have been studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the past five years. From the theory of TCM, the human body is integrated, itself and the universe, completely connected.

Acupuncture sites are named after mountains or valleys. Organs are often named after images of what they represent, the womb is called Zi Gong, which means Child Palace. Sometimes diseases are called seasons. The work of herbs is usually attached to the part of the body that is visible, such as Ba Ji Tian which looks like a tendon and is used to strengthen the tendon. While in the hospital, I saw thousands of people coming from all over China to receive medical treatment and the joy they had in their parks. Many patients explained that their faith in this natural medicine came from an uninterrupted history (more than three thousand years) of practice and gave good results, often without side effects. The small hospital where I worked was built on the site where an ancient TCM practitioner had his first clinic, two thousand years ago! Chinese medicine has never had a dark age and the Chinese people are proud of this. Outside the hospital every morning I saw large groups of people doing Qi Gong and Tai Ji, and movements called different animals, another link between people and nature that drives Chinese people.

After a while I began to relax and see how nature was integrated into the lives of the people around me. I began to look at rocks and mountains differently, thinking about deeper meanings than the type of things they were made of. I started getting comfortable with cars again. Instead of seeing things as chaotic and disorganized, I began to see the water level increasing. The roads became rivers and the cars became like water, moving around every obstacle they encountered. Once I used my imagination, China became a symbolic place that was deeper than the overabundance and pollution I had been warned about.
