The Black Sea – A Novel by Richard Setlowe

“The Experiment” by Richard Setlowe, written in 1980, has become one of my favorite science books. I always wanted to read more about his work, but I didn’t understand it until recently when I came across the book “Black Sea.” The first thriller of espionage, obsession and piracy on the high seas was written in 1991 and proved to be a great book that will stand for a long time.

Dr. Maggi Chancellor, a professor of Asian studies, is aboard the Black Sea, a Russian luxury cruise ship. He is an unpaid passenger, working as a tourist coach. Before the end of the first day the ship was hijacked by pirates in the Strait of Singapore. Tengku Haji Azhar and his gang of Malaccan pirates hijacked the ship and hid it in a well-hidden spot in a jungle river. Tengku has already received the attention of the American, Singaporean and Russian governments for donating the severed head of a member of staff at Raffles, a major Western hotel. The terrorists want weapons from the hostages and if the governments don’t comply more heads will roll. The USS Decatur, a guided-missile frigate operating in the area under Captain Henry Stewart, patrols the Black Sea as Maggi, the only passenger who speaks the language of the rebels, tries to negotiate in order to save lives.

The characters are well developed and Setlowe does a good job of empathizing with them. He tells the story in a number of ways that add to the suspense. The backstory, far from undermining the plot, is fascinating. History, especially in Singapore and Malaysia, adds an unusual description. The details of culture, politics and the US Navy add depth to the plot. This is a fast-paced adventure that will delight fans of the adventure game.
