UEFA Champions League Last 16 Draw
The draw for the UEFA Champions League last 16 of this season has taken place and it has brought the exciting games we have been waiting for. The games take place on February 24th & 25th with the return legs two weeks later on March 10th & 11th. Here is the full photo taken in Nyon, Switzerland:
Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon v Bayern Munich
Atletico Madrid v FC Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v Roma
Inter Milan v Manchester United
Current Manchester United champions Sir Alex Ferguson will meet his old friend, ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and his Inter Milan side who were relegated by Liverpool last year in the same round. Mourinho made it clear that he wanted to sign one of the “big four” English clubs and he got what he wanted, with the first leg played at the San Siro. The game at Old Trafford will no doubt revive memories of Mourinho’s famous celebration, when he ran towards the end of March 2004 as his Porto side scored the last-gasp goal that sent United out of the Champions League. Indeed Mourinho and Porto lifted the trophy that season beating Monaco in the final.
Sir Alex Ferguson is also looking forward to the match. Ferguson believes that it will be very interesting to play against Mourinho as he has good character. In contrast to what happened between the pair when Mourinho was in charge of Chelsea, Ferguson said he always got on well with the Inter Milan manager. It didn’t take long for Mourinho to start the emotional word game again when talking to Man Utd. He said he wanted to compete with the best players and found European champions. Man Utd could also be World Club winners in Japan this weekend. Meanwhile another English team, Liverpool, were drawn against Spanish champions Real Madrid and their new manager, ex-Tottenham, Juande Ramos. The former Tottenham manager has just taken over at the Bernabeu and is no doubt looking forward to returning to England with 9-time winners Real Madrid. Liverpool have the advantage of a second game at Anfield thanks to their top team finish. The tie is a repeat of the 1981 Paris final, where the English side won 1-0 thanks to a goal by defender Alan Kennedy. This was the last time the two giants of European football met in a competitive match.
The draw also gave Italian coach Claudio Ranieri the opportunity to return to London and Stamford Bridge, against his old club Chelsea, who were beaten in last year’s final. Ranieri is now the manager of Italian giants Juventus. Ranieri was a popular figure at Stamford Bridge before being replaced by none other than Jose Mourinho in 2004. This despite Ranieri leading them to the semi-final of the Champions League, where they were defeated by Monaco, who as mentioned above were beaten by Mourinho and Porto. Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal will have the first leg at home when they face AS Roma. The Arsenal manager believes the Gunners, like every other team left in the competition, have a chance to lift the trophy in Rome in May. Although Arsenal and Chelsea’s matches were difficult, they would have been relieved that the draw could have been joined by the favorites Barcelona. They will be more than happy to avoid the Catalans, as mentioned above Arsenal and Chelsea are facing difficulties against AS Roma and Juventus respectively.
The “unlucky” team who drew Barcelona were French champions Lyon and as they look forward to the game, their sporting director Bernard Lacombe admits he is very worried. Lyon could not have been given a more difficult game.
Spanish side Villareal, who finished second in the group stage behind Manchester Utd, were offered, which on paper at least, looked like one of the easiest. They face the Greek team Panathinaikos who made Inter Milan top of their group. Therefore, Panathinaikos will also be encouraged that they did not finish second, as Utd would have expected. Former players, and I suspect the dark horse of this season’s tournament, Bayern Munich, will play against the Portuguese team Sporting Lisbon and in the final match of another Portuguese team, Porto will face another Spanish team, Athletico Madrid.
There are some good games to look forward to at the beginning of 2009. Undoubtedly there will be many games and few distractions, the UEFA Champions League does not disappoint once it enters the sudden death stages.
