The Bible, a Living Document
Sir Isaac Newton is quoted as saying “There are more sure signs of the authenticity of the Bible than in any other deep history.” Indeed, the Bible is a living book, the true word of God. Let’s look at three types of evidence to prove this. Consider 1) “scriptural evidence,” 2) information written thousands of years ago that science has proven to be correct, and 3) the fulfillment of Bible prophecy.
1. Handwritten Evidence
The Bible as we know it first existed as handwritten manuscripts. Historians examine manuscripts to determine whether ancient writings were authentic. Today, there are more than 24,000 copies containing all or parts of the New Testament, which was written as early as 50 AD. This is amazing! Homer’s Iliad, the most famous and well-written work of ancient Greece, has only 643 copies left. (In fact, there are more conflicting lines in the 643 manuscripts of the Iliad than in all the manuscripts of the New Testament.) Compare this to the fact that we do not have ANY manuscripts of William Shakespeare’s 37 plays, which were written less than 400 years ago.
2. Archeology
Science proves time and time again that the Bible is the inspired word of God. Here are three examples.
Two thousand five hundred years ago, the prophet Isaiah spoke of the earth being “round” at a time when everyone believed it was flat (Isaiah 40:22). History refers to the “discovery” of the universe around the 16th century.
In Job’s time, people believed that a god named Atlas held the earth on his shoulder! No one believed that the world “hangs in vain.” (Job 26:7) Job is the oldest book in the Bible; it was written 3500 years ago
The text of Ecclesiastes 1:7 says: “All rivers flow into the sea, but the sea is not full; The writer of Ecclesiastes knew about shortness and evaporation. We call it the water cycle. Galileo was the one who discovered this in 1630! The book of Ecclesiastes was written in 1000 BC
3. Prophecy
There are many prophecies written in the Bible that history says were fulfilled. Here we see just one with several aspects that have been fulfilled in detail. To this day the fulfillment of this prophecy is beyond dispute.
The text of Ezekiel 26:1-6, 12 says: “The word of Jehovah came to me, saying: . . . And they will tear down the walls of Tyre, and pull down its towers, and I will shake off its dust, and weigh it on a rock, there will be a place for nets in the middle of the sea. : for I have spoken, says the Lord Jehovah.
Tire was a powerful city in the ancient Phoenician empire. This prophecy was given around 586 BC Babylon, under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar, besieged the city for 13 years, literally demolishing the towers, as predicted in the words of Ezekiel. At that time, the people of Tire fled to another island near the sea, and began to rebuild the city. Babylon had no navy, so Tire survived the war. But in 333 BC (250 years later), the Greek army, led by Alexander the Great, placed “stones, wood and dust” in the city “in the middle of the water”, to build a bridge to the city. an island. Tire was completely destroyed, and never came back. To this day, fishermen can be found “laying their nets” there to dry, just as the prophecy said.
4. Conclusion
Woodrow Wilson once said: “When you read the Bible, you will realize that it is the Word of God, because you will have found that it is the secret of your heart, your happiness, and your work.” The more a person studies the scriptures, the more clearly he sees the truth, that the Bible is the word of God, revealed to man.
